About the Lab
Professor Junsung Kim's research lab specializes in the exploration of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials and their heterostructures, with a focus on emergent quantum phenomena and spintronic applications. The lab investigates intrinsic magnetic order, correlated electron states such as excitonic insulators, and topological quantum effects in atomically thin materials, particularly in transition metal dichalcogenides and graphene-based systems. By combining advanced nanoscale characterization techniques—such as Raman spectroscopy, scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and transport measurements—the lab aims to uncover and engineer novel quantum phases and spintronic functionalities at the 2D limit.

15A theoretically designed van der Waals ferromagnet Fe 4 GeTe 2 is synthesized and shows the nearly room temperature ferromagnetism.
Atomically thin nanosheets, as recently realized using van der Waals layered materials, offer a versatile platform for studying the stability and tunability of the correlated electron phases in the reduced dimension. Here, we investigate a thickness-dependent excitonic insulating (EI) phase on a layered ternary chalcogenide Ta2NiSe5. Using Raman spectroscopy, scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and in-plane transport measurements, we found no significant changes in crystalline and electronic struct
Abstract Discovery of two dimensional (2D) magnets, showing intrinsic ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AFM) orders, has accelerated development of novel 2D spintronics, in which all the key components are made of van der Waals (vdW) materials and their heterostructures. High-performing and energy-efficient spin functionalities have been proposed, often relying on current-driven manipulation and detection of the spin states. In this regard, metallic vdW magnets are expected to have severa
This multimodal nanoprobe with enhanced fluorescence may provide a useful tool for imaging diagnostics and cell tracking.
We have investigated fractional quantum Hall (QH) states in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene using transconductance fluctuation measurements. A variety of odd-denominator fractional QH states with νQH → νQH + 2 symmetry, as previously reported, are observed. However, surprising is that also particle-hole symmetric states are clearly resolved in the same measurement set. We attribute their emergence to the reversal of orbital states in the octet level scheme induced by a strong local charge imbala
Abstract All‐Van der Waals (vdW)‐material‐based heterostructures with atomically sharp interfaces offer a versatile platform for high‐performing spintronic functionalities at room temperature. One of the key components is vdW topological insulators (TIs), which can produce a strong spin‐orbit‐torque (SOT) through the spin‐momentum locking of their topological surface state (TSS). However, the relatively low conductance of the TSS introduces a current leakage problem through the bulk states of th
Abstract Symmetry-protected band degeneracy, coupled with a magnetic order, is the key to realizing novel magnetoelectric phenomena in topological magnets. While the spin-polarized nodal states have been identified to introduce extremely-sensitive electronic responses to the magnetic states, their possible role in determining magnetic ground states has remained elusive. Here, taking external pressure as a control knob, we show that a metal-insulator transition, a spin-reorientation transition, a
Abstract Anomalous transport responses, dictated by the nontrivial band topology, are the key for application of topological materials to advanced electronics and spintronics. One promising platform is topological nodal-line semimetals due to their rich topology and exotic physical properties. However, their transport signatures have often been masked by the complexity in band crossings or the coexisting topologically trivial states. Here we show that, in slightly hole-doped SrAs 3 , the single-
