About the Lab
Professor Ki Wook Yun's research lab specializes in pediatric infectious diseases, with a focus on understanding the etiology, pathogenesis, and clinical management of bacterial and viral infections in children. The lab investigates respiratory pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and respiratory viruses in community-acquired pneumonia, as well as uropathogenic Escherichia coli and group B streptococcus in pediatric urinary tract and invasive infections. Using molecular typing techniques like MLST, phylogenetic grouping, and fimH genotyping, the lab explores the genetic diversity and virulence factors of these pathogens to inform diagnosis and treatment strategies.

Pneumolysin (Ply) and pneumococcal histidine triad protein D (PhtD) are candidate proteins for a next-generation pneumococcal vaccine. We aimed to analyze the genetic diversity and antigenic heterogeneity of Ply and PhtD for 173 pneumococci isolated from invasive diseases in Korean children.
