About the Lab
Professor Ki-Yong Na's research lab specializes in diagnostic and molecular pathology, with a focus on rare and complex neoplasms of the female genital tract, salivary gland tumors, and dermatologic conditions. The lab investigates the clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and genetic features of tumors such as mesonephric adenocarcinoma, secretory carcinoma, and uterine-like masses, emphasizing novel genetic alterations and their clinical implications. A key direction involves using molecular diagnostics, including pyrosequencing and FISH, to identify recurrent mutations (e.g., CTNNB1, TP53) and fusion genes (e.g., ETV6-NTRK3), advancing precision pathology. The lab also contributes to the characterization of rare conditions like acne keloidalis nuchae in non-Black populations, expanding the understanding of their pathological spectrum and behavior.

15Mesonephric adenocarcinoma (MNAC) is a rare tumor of the female genital tract mainly occurring in the uterine cervix. To date, only a few cases of MNAC arising from of the uterine body (UB-MNAC) have been reported. The clinicopathologic and molecular characteristics of UB-MNAC remain unknown. Acne keloidalis nuchae, a type of folliculitis involving the back of the neck, is common in black men, although rare cases have been reported in patients of other ethnicities. We analyzed the clinicopathological features of acne keloidalis nuchae in 17 Asians. Patients' age at the time of presentation ranged from 20 to 69 years. We demonstrated a previously reported CTNNB1 point-mutation using pyrosequencing and a novel deletion mutation in ovarian MCSTs. The review of the literature of previously published cases in combination with our current cases clarifies the clinicopathological characteristics of ovarian MCST and the comprehensive analysis of these cases would expand our knowledge regarding ovarian MCST.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney (ADPKD) is rare. To date, 54 cases of RCC in ADPKD have been reported. Our observation regarding the occurrence of HSIL involving perianal condyloma acuminatum in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients suggests that active, complete surgical excision of perianal condyloma acuminatum and a thorough histopathological examination are necessary.
