About the Lab
Professor Kyoung Suk Lee's research lab focuses on cardiovascular and respiratory health, with a strong emphasis on heart failure management, symptom clusters, and their impact on clinical outcomes. The lab investigates patient-reported outcomes, self-care behaviors, and sleep quality as key determinants of disease progression and survival. It also explores molecular mechanisms in airway diseases, particularly the interplay between VEGF and TGF-beta(1) in airway remodeling. Overall, the lab integrates clinical, psychosocial, and translational research to improve patient-centered care and outcomes.

15Although distress for individual symptoms may differ between men and women, they both experienced identical symptom clusters. Only the emotional/cognitive cluster predicted a higher risk for a cardiac event. These results suggested that interventions should be developed that consider symptom clusters. Targeting patients who have high distress from emotional/cognitive symptoms may be particularly important as they may be most vulnerable for adverse outcomes.
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a mediator of airway inflammation and remodelling in asthma. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta(1) plays pivotal roles in diverse biological processes, including tissue remodelling and repair in a number of chronic lung diseases. However, there are few studies elucidating the interactions between VEGF and TGF-beta(1) in allergic airway disease. A murine model of allergic airway disease was used to define the mechanism by which VEGF induces subepith
BACKGROUND: Poor sleep quality is common and is associated with poor quality of life and health status in patients with heart failure. However, few investigators have focused on the impact of impaired sleep quality on survival in heart failure. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether self-reported sleep quality is associated with prognosis in patients with heart failure. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 204 patients with heart failure. Sleep quality was measured with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Ind
Adequacy of self-care management was predicted by adherence to symptom monitoring behaviors. This finding suggests that regular symptom monitoring facilitates performance of adequate self-care management, which may contribute to a decrease in preventable hospitalizations in HF.
BACKGROUND: Although incomplete understanding of heart failure and its signs and symptoms appears to be a barrier to successful self-care, there are few studies examining the relationship between self-care and levels of comprehensive understanding of heart failure and its signs and symptoms. AIM: To determine whether incomplete understanding of heart failure and its signs and symptoms is associated with self-care in heart failure patients who were recently discharged from the hospital due to hea
Our data support the psychometric properties of the DASI as a measure of functional status in patients with HF. This instrument can be used to evaluate functional status and enhance health care provider understanding of functional status related to daily living from the patient perspective.
BACKGROUND: The prevalence of heart failure (HF) is expected to rise due to increased survivorship and life expectancy of patients with acute heart conditions. Patients with HF and other multiple comorbid conditions are likely to have poor health outcomes. This study aimed to assimilate the current body of knowledge and to provide the pooled effect of HF patients' comorbid conditions on health outcomes. METHODS: statistics. RESULTS: A total of 42 studies were included in this review, and a meta-
Backgrounds: Perceptions of health are important to motivate people to change behaviors. Non-adherence to healthy behaviors that prevent cardiovascular disease may result from inadequate health perceptions. However, there are few studies investigating relationships between health perceptions and psychological states. Objective: To determine whether psychological states (ie, depressive symptoms and anxiety) are associated with the congruency between health perception and estimated r
The variables included in the model did not sufficiently explain self-care among rural dwellers with HF. Given that all variables in the model were intrapersonal-level factors, more investigations that incorporate interpersonal factors (e.g. cultural beliefs and access to care) are needed in order to improve our understanding of self-care in HF patients living in rural areas.
BACKGROUND: People living with multimorbidity experience increased treatment burden, which can result in poor health outcomes. Despite previous efforts to grasp the concept of treatment burden, the treatment burden of people living with multimorbidity has not been thoroughly explored, which may limit our understanding of treatment burden in this population. This study aimed to identify the components, contributing factors, and health outcomes of treatment burden in people with multiple diseases
BACKGROUND: Accurate symptom perception is a fundamentally essential component of self-care for patients with heart failure (HF) so they can make appropriate decisions about their symptoms. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this integrative review was to describe the pathways of the symptom perception process and its contributing factors in patients with HF. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, and PsycINFO databases to identify studies describing the symptom pe
BACKGROUND: Toluene diisocyanate (TDI)-induced asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by airway remodelling due, at least in part, to an excess of extracellular matrix deposition in the airway wall. The ratio of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) may be a marker of the balance between airway tissue destruction and repair. OBJECTIVE: We determined whether an imbalance of the MMP-9 : TIMP-1 molar ratio is p
BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms hinder heart failure patients' engagement in self-care. As social support helps improve self-care and decrease depressive symptoms, it is possible that social support buffers the negative impact of depressive symptoms on self-care. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of living arrangements as an indicator of social support on the relationship between depressive symptoms and self-care in heart failure patients. METHODS: Stable heart failur
BACKGROUND: A decline in cognition may limit patients' ability to effectively engage in self-care in those with heart failure (HF). However, several studies have shown no difference in self-care between HF patients with and without cognitive impairment. This may indicate that there are more salient factors associated with self-care in HF patients with cognitive impairment compared with those without cognitive impairment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore which factors are related t
