About the Lab

Professor Kyubo Kim's research lab specializes in translational oncology and radiation oncology, focusing on improving outcomes for patients with rare and aggressive solid tumors such as malignant phyllodes tumor of the breast, esophageal and head & neck cancers, and thyroid cancer. The lab integrates population-based data, molecular profiling, and advanced radiotherapy techniques to identify prognostic factors, optimize treatment strategies, and evaluate the role of adjuvant therapies like chemoradiotherapy and intensity-modulated radiation therapy. A key focus is on understanding biological mechanisms underlying tumor progression and treatment response, particularly in relation to immune regulation and secretory pathways in the tumor microenvironment.

Radiation therapy for malignant phyllodes tumor of the breast: An analysis of SEER data
Yi‐Jun Kim, Kyubo Kim
SJR Q1The BreastOA

PURPOSE: Malignant phyllodes tumor of the breast (MPTB) accounts for less than 1% of whole breast neoplasm. Surgery is regarded as the primary treatment of choice in patients with MPTB, but the necessity of postoperative radiation therapy (RT) has been a subject of debate. Our aim was to evaluate effects of postoperative RT for MPTB using a large population database. METHODS: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) database (1983-2013), clinico-pathologic prognostic

Airway mucin secretion and MC (mast cell) degranulation must be tightly controlled for homoeostasis of the lungs and immune system respectively. We found the exocytic protein Munc18b to be highly expressed in mouse airway epithelial cells and MCs, and localized to the apical pole of airway secretory cells. To address its functions, we created a mouse with a severely hypomorphic Munc18b allele such that protein expression in heterozygotes was reduced by ~50%. Homozygous mutant mice were not viabl

Adjuvant chemoradiotherapy after curative resection can achieve a long-term survival in patients with EHBD cancer. Resection margin status, number of involved lymph nodes, and histologic differentiation are associated with locoregional relapse, distant metastasis, and overall survival, respectively. Distant metastasis was the major pattern of failure, possibly due to the increased locoregional control by use of adjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Intensification of systemic treatment is warranted.

SJR Q1World Journal of Surgery

Abstract Background Recently, the American Joint Committee on Cancer published the 8th edition of its Cancer Staging Manual with major changes regarding the staging of thyroid cancer, including the raising of the age cutoff from 45 to 55 years. Using the clinical and genetic data of 505 papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) cases, we aimed to compare overall survival (OS) and recurrence‐free survival (RFS) with different age cutoff values, and also investigate the efficacy of the new staging system on

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) with simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) technique following neoadjuvant chemotherapy for locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). METHODS: Between April 2004 and December 2006, 25 patients with stage IIB to IVB NPC underwent 3 cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by IMRT using SIB technique. Neoadjuvant chemotherapeutic regimens were 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin in

Survival benefit of radiotherapy after surgery in de novo stage IV breast cancer: a population-based propensity-score matched analysis
Yi‐Jun Kim, So‐Youn Jung, Kyubo Kim
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

The survival benefit from radiotherapy in stage IV breast cancer has not been fully evaluated. We investigated the survival benefit of radiotherapy after surgery in de novo stage IV breast cancer. Using a population-based database (the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database 18, 2010-2013), patients diagnosed with de novo stage IV breast cancer were divided into those undergoing surgery alone (no-radiotherapy group) and those undergoing surgery followed by radiotherapy (radiotherapy
