About the Lab

Professor Kyung Ah Jeong's research lab focuses on reproductive health and fertility preservation, with a strong emphasis on the biological mechanisms of ovarian aging and DNA repair in oocytes. The lab investigates molecular pathways—particularly ATM-mediated DNA double-strand break repair—that contribute to primordial follicle depletion with age, using both mouse and human oocyte models. Additional research explores diagnostic imaging techniques for gynecological conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease and the application of ultrasound in diagnosing polycystic ovary syndrome in virgin patients. The lab also examines the role of nutritional factors in cognitive health among elderly patients with Alzheimer’s disease, highlighting a multidisciplinary approach to women’s health across the lifespan.

The underlying mechanism behind age-induced wastage of the human ovarian follicle reserve is unknown. We identify impaired ATM (ataxia-telangiectasia mutated)-mediated DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair as a cause of aging in mouse and human oocytes. We show that DSBs accumulate in primordial follicles with age. In parallel, expression of key DNA DSB repair genes BRCA1, MRE11, Rad51, and ATM, but not BRCA2, declines in single mouse and human oocytes. In Brca1-deficient mice, reproductive capac

SJR Q2Journal of obstetrics and gynaecology research

AIM: To evaluate retrospectively the performance of computed tomography (CT) for the diagnosis of acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) by the use of clinical and laboratory data as the reference standard. METHODS: The study was approved by the institutional review board. A total of 190 women of reproductive age (age range, 16-49 years; mean age, 29.3 ± 7.6 years) with complaints of non-traumatic acute lower abdominal pain underwent subsequent abdominopelvic CT. The diagnosis of acute PID was

SJR Q2Journal of obstetrics and gynaecology researchOA

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare clinical and surgical outcomes of robotic single-port hysterectomy (RSPH) using the da Vinci® SP surgical system and robotic multisite hysterectomy (RMSH) with the da Vinci Xi system in benign gynecologic disease. METHODS: The retrospective study included 134 patients who underwent RSPH or RMSH between November 2019 and December 2020. Total operation time, amount of blood loss, and the change in hemoglobin (Hb) after surgery and the weight of the removed u

The purpose of this study was to investigate nutrients or food factors related to cognitive function of elderly having Alzheimer’s disease. In this study 38 subjects who were over 65 years old have participated in dementia clinic at A medical center. After they were diagnosed to Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) through blood analysis, neuropsychological test, brain image and interview by medical specialist, we examined for their general information, anthropometry, blood pressure and dietary intakes. Cryopreservation of ovarian tissue and future autotransplantation are new promising strategies for fertility preservation in various malignant and non-malignant diseases facing the risk of ovarian failure. Ovarian cortrical tissue pieces or intact whole ovary can be removed by laparoscopy without any significant delay in chemotherapy. Slow freezing and vitrification methods are developed to avoid damage to follicles. Ovarian tissue can be transplanted in an orthotopic or heterotopic location whe

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to identify predictive markers for abnormal glucose metabolism in Korean women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODSː A total of 312 PCOS patients were evaluated. All patients underwent 75-g oral glucose tolerance tests. The 2-hour plasma glucose level was used to categorize subjects as impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to c

Abstract To investigate the role of robotic single-site (RSS) ovarian cystectomy in fertility preservation, which was compared with single-port laparoscopic (SPL) surgery based on AMH changes. We retrospectively analyzed medical records of total 156 patients who underwent SPL ( n = 72) or RSS ( n = 84) surgery with the da Vinci ® Si or Xi system. The pre/post-operative AMH levels and total diameter of ovarian cysts were measured. In addition to the surgical method, AMH changes were compared acco

SJR Q2International Journal of Gynecological Pathology

The goal of this study is to evaluate the chromosomal loss in abdominal wall endometriosis by chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH). Twenty-four cases of abdominal wall endometriosis that developed after cesarean section at the Korea University Medical Center between January 1997 and December 2006 were selected. CISH was performed in the sections of tissue microarray block using the Zymed CISH centromeric probes for chromosomes 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 17, and 18. Monosomy was defined when the per
