About the Lab

Professor Kyung Hwan Kim's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research with a strong emphasis on clinical pharmacology, cardiovascular disease management, and natural product therapeutics. The lab investigates pharmacogenomic variability in drug metabolism—particularly for immunosuppressants like tacrolimus—while also exploring interventional strategies for valvular and structural heart diseases. Additionally, the lab evaluates the bioactive properties of traditional medicinal plants, such as Cucurbita moschata, for antioxidant and dermatological applications. Recent work also includes critical care innovations, such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support during complex pulmonary procedures in oncology patients.

SJR Q1Journal of Medical Internet ResearchOA

BACKGROUND: South Korea took preemptive action against coronavirus disease (COVID-19) by implementing extensive testing, thorough epidemiological investigation, strict social distancing, and rapid treatment of patients according to disease severity. The Korean government entrusted large-scale hospitals with the operation of living and treatment support centers (LTSCs) for the management for clinically healthy COVID-19 patients. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to introduce our experience impl

CYP3A5*3 Genotype Associated With Intrasubject Pharmacokinetic Variation Toward Tacrolimus in Bioequivalence Study
Jae‐Yong Chung, Yoon Jung Lee, Seong Bok Jang, Lay Ahyoung Lim, Min Soo Park, Kyung Hwan Kim
SJR Q2Therapeutic Drug MonitoringOA

Tacrolimus is metabolized by CYP3A and has highly variable pharmacokinetics. To study the factors contributing to this high variability in pharmacokinetics and to investigate the possibility of genotype-specific clinical applications, the effect of differing CYP3A5 genotypes on the intrasubject coefficients of variation for tacrolimus was investigated. Genotyping for CYP3A5*3 was performed in healthy volunteers who had previously participated in the pharmacokinetic study of 2 tacrolimus formulat

Long-term results of annuloplasty in trivial-to-mild functional tricuspid regurgitation during mitral valve replacement: should we perform annuloplasty on the tricuspid valve or leave it alone?
Jae Woong Choi, Kyung Hwan Kim, Hyoung Woo Chang, Myoung‐jin Jang, Sue Hyun Kim, Sang Yoon Yeom, Ho Young Hwang
SJR Q1European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery

Patients with untreated trivial or mild functional TR accompanied by mitral valve disease can develop significant TR during follow-up. TV ring annuloplasty can be performed without complications and can be beneficial for patients with trivial or mild functional TR who are undergoing MVR.

SJR Q4Korean Journal of Food Science and TechnologyOA

Use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) during whole lung lavage in pulmonary alveolar proteinosis associated with lung cancer
Kyung Hwan Kim
SJR Q1European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic SurgeryOA

We describe a case of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis in a male adult with lung cancer. To achieve the successful operation of lung cancer, we used percutaneous veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) during whole lung lavage (WLL) of the contralateral lung. We performed successful WLL under ECMO support.

SJR Q1Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences

Elevated Ca(2+) concentrations within the pancreatic acinar cells represent a risk factor for the development of acute pancreatitis. Apoptosis is an important characteristic of pancreatitis, with induction of apoptotic genes and intraceullar increase of calcium, endonucleases, and protease. The present study, which aims to investigate whether (1) cerulein induces apoptotic gene expression (bax, bid, p53) in pancreatic acinar AR42J cells and (2) cerulein-induced gene expression is mediated by int

SJR Q2Applied SciencesOA

Smoking is an important variable for clinical research, but there are few studies regarding automatic obtainment of smoking classification from unstructured bilingual electronic health records (EHR). We aim to develop an algorithm to classify smoking status based on unstructured EHRs using natural language processing (NLP). With acronym replacement and Python package Soynlp, we normalize 4711 bilingual clinical notes. Each EHR notes was classified into 4 categories: current smokers, past smokers
