About the Lab
Professor Kyung Hyun Kim's research spans interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of cultural studies, media studies, and science and technology studies, with a focus on Korean popular culture, digital media, and the socio-technical dimensions of contemporary Korean society. His lab investigates the global impact of the Korean Wave (Hallyu), including film, television, internet culture, and digital subcultures such as PC bangs and online fandoms. The lab also explores the scientific and technological foundations of emerging materials and green chemistry, particularly in CO2-philic molecules and supercritical CO2 applications. These diverse yet interconnected research directions reflect a commitment to understanding both the cultural transformations and scientific innovations shaping modern Korea and their global implications.

15Comprehension of the basic concepts for the design of CO2-philic molecules is important due to the possibility for "green" chemistry in supercritical CO2 of substitute solvent systems. Lewis acid-base interactions and C-H...O weak hydrogen bonding were suggested as two key factors in the solubility of CO2-philic molecules. To isolate the stabilization energy of weak hydrogen bonding from the overall binding energy, high-level quantum mechanical calculations were performed for the van der Waals c
KP has a significant advantage over VP in terms of kyphosis correction, vertebral height restoration, and cement leakage prevention. KP has an obvious advantage in terms of middle vertebral height restoration and cement leakage prevention, especially for V-shape compression fractures.
Vertebral height decreased with age, but spinal canal diameter did not change in patients with either LSS or HCD. Mid-spinal canal diameter was not affected by aging.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case analysis. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to investigate the course of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) progression after laminoplasty (LP) or laminectomy with posterior fixation (PF). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: LP is now recognized as a standard technique for the treatment of cervical multisegment OPLL; however, PF is beneficial for patients with severe stenosis. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in mechanical str
Alcohol consumption increases apoptosis of hepatocytes. Death of hepatocytes is a characteristic feature of chronic liver disease for various causes. Bee venom (Apis mellifera) has been traditionally used for the treatment of various chronic diseases, such as chronic inflammatory arthritis and chronic liver disease. However, the precise mechanism for bee venom in chronic liver disease is not still cleared. To assess the effects of bee venom in chronic liver disease, we investigated the potential
BACKGROUND: Many patients with cervical radiculopathy experience stenosis of the neural foramens due to cumulative osteophyte or uncovertebral joint hypertrophy. For cervical foraminal stenosis, complete uncinate process resection (UPR) is often conducted concurrently with anterior discectomy and fusion (ACDF). The aim of this study was to assess the clinical and radiological outcomes of ACDF with complete UPR versus ACDF without UPR. METHODS: In total, 105 patients who performed one-level ACDF
UNLABELLED: Honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) venom (BV) has been traditionally used for the treatment of pain and inflammatory diseases such as itchy skin problems. However, the precise mechanism of BV in ameliorating the scratching behavior is not fully understood. OBJECTIVE: In order to evaluate the effect of BV on atopic dermatitis-related symptoms in mice, we used a mouse skin scratching model induced by compound 48/80. The anti-itch effect of BV was investigated in a compound 48/80-induced mous
The BH5 molecule contains a weak two-electron-three-center bond and it requires extremely high level of theories to calculate the energy and structure correctly. The potential energy of the hydrogen scrambling in BH5 has been generated by the multiconfiguration molecular mechanics algorithm with 15 high-level Shepard interpolation points, which would be practically impossible to obtain otherwise. The high-level interpolation points were obtained from the multicoefficient correlated quantum mecha
OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical and radiographic results between open transforaminal interbody fusion (TLIF-O) and minimally invasive TLIF (TLIF-M) for single-level low grade isthmic spondylolisthesis (IS). METHODS: This study enrolled 45 patients who underwent single-level TLIF with low grade IS. The patients were divided into two groups according to operative method: TLIF-M (20 patients) and TLIF-O (25 patients). TLIF-O group was matched with TLIF-M. RESULTS: At one-year postoperatively, th
Exploring the basic concepts for the design of CO2-philic molecules is important due to the possibility for “green” chemistry in supercritical CO2 as substitute solvent systems. The Lewis acid-base interactions and C?H…O weak hydrogen bonding were suggested as two key factors for the solubility of CO2-philic molecules. We have performed high level quantum mechanical calculations for the van der Waals complexes of CO2 with trimethylphosphate and trimethylphosphine oxide, which have long been used
