About the Lab

Professor Kyung Min Kim's research lab specializes in advanced oxide-based resistive switching devices and their applications in next-generation neuromorphic computing and bio-integrated electronics. The lab focuses on understanding the fundamental mechanisms of resistance switching in binary oxide thin films—particularly TiO₂, NiO, HfO₂, and NbOₓ—through detailed electrical and materials characterization. Key research directions include the development of low-power, forming-free memristors with self-rectifying behavior, biomimetic electronic synapses and neurons for artificial nervous systems, and the integration of these devices into scalable crossbar arrays. The lab also explores the interplay between mechanical stimuli and cellular responses, particularly in mesenchymal stem cell differentiation under physiological shear stress, bridging materials science with biomedical engineering.

Sex differences in the association between chronotype and risk of depression
Kyung Min Kim, Seung Min Han, Kyoung Heo, Won‐Joo Kim, Min Kyung Chu
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Information on sex differences in the association between chronotype and depression is scarce. We aimed to investigate these differences using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2016. Chronotypes were categorised based on mid-sleep time on free days corrected by sleep debt accumulated on workdays (MSFsc): early type, < mean MSFsc - 1 standard deviation (SD); intermediate type, between mean MSFsc - 1 SD and MSFsc + 1 SD; and late type, > mean MSFsc + 1 SD. Epidemiologic features of the first MERS outbreak in Korea: focus on Pyeongtaek St. Mary’s Hospital

SJR Q2Epidemiology and HealthOA

The attack rates were higher than those of the previous outbreaks in other countries. The outbreak spread beyond Pyeongtaek St. Mary's Hospital when four of the patients were moved to other hospitals without appropriate quarantine. The best method of preventing future outbreaks is to overcome the vulnerabilities observed in this outbreak, such as ward crowding, patient migration without appropriate data sharing, and the lack of an initial broad quarantine.

Prevalence and impact of visual aura in migraine and probable migraine: a population study
Kyung Min Kim, Byung-Kun Kim, Wonwoo Lee, Heewon Hwang, Kyoung Heo, Min Kyung Chu
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Visual aura (VA) presents in 98% of cases of migraine with aura. However, data on its prevalence and impact in individuals with migraine and probable migraine (PM) are limited. Data from the nation-wide, population-based Circannual Change in Headache and Sleep Study were collected. Participants with VA rating scale scores ≥ 3 were classified as having VA. Of 3,030 participants, 170 (5.6%) and 337 (11.1%) had migraine and PM, respectively; VA prevalence did not differ between these cohorts (29.4%

Prevalence and characteristics of cutaneous allodynia in probable migraine
Seung Min Han, Kyung Min Kim, Soo‐Jin Cho, Kwang Ik Yang, Daeyoung Kim, Chang‐Ho Yun, Min Kyung Chu
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Cutaneous allodynia (CA) is a pain in response to non-nociceptive stimulation and a marker of central sensitisation. Probable migraine (PM) is a migraine subtype that fulfils all but one criterion of migraine. Headache intensity and the disability of individuals with PM are similar or lower than individuals with migraine. This study compared CA prevalence and characteristics of PM and migraine using a nationally representative sample in Korea. The Allodynia Symptom Checklist-12 (ASC-12) was used

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Information technology advances may help in conducting epidemiological studies using web-based surveys. Questionnaire-based headache diagnosis should be validated against the doctor's diagnosis. This study aimed to develop and validate a web-based diagnostic questionnaire for migraine, probable migraine (PM), and tension-type headache (TTH). We constructed a seven-item questionnaire for diagnosing migraine, PM, and TTH. A web-based survey was conducted among adults aged 20-59 years; migraine, PM

SJR Q1EClinicalMedicineOA

Background: Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential in meningitis and encephalitis management. We aimed to implement and verify an artificial intelligence (AI) model for early aetiological determination of patients with encephalitis and meningitis, and identify important variables in the classification process. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, patients older than 18 years old with meningitis or encephalitis at two centres in South Korea were enrolled for develo

Self-reported insomnia as a marker for anxiety and depression among migraineurs: a population-based cross-sectional study
Kyung Min Kim, Dong Hyun Lee, Eun‐Ju Lee, Yun Ho Roh, Won‐Joo Kim, Soo‐Jin Cho, Kwang Ik Yang, Chang‐Ho Yun, Min Kyung Chu
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Anxiety, depression, and insomnia are highly prevalent among migraineurs and are associated with negative health consequences. Anxiety and depression, however, unlike insomnia, are usually underdiagnosed, due to less self-reporting of these two conditions. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the risk of anxiety and depression in migraineurs with self-reported insomnia, using a general population-based sample. We used data from a nationwide population-based survey on headache and sleep,

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Although coffee is one of the most consumed caffeinated beverages worldwide, the role of coffee consumption in migraine is controversial. This study examined the relationship between coffee consumption and clinical characteristics in participants with migraine compared to those with non-migraine headache. This cross-sectional study used data from a nationwide survey on headache and sleep. Coffee consumption was classified as no-to-low (< 1 cup/day), moderate (1-2 cups/day), or high (≥ 3 cups/day

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Recently, the most bothersome symptom has been recommended as a co-primary endpoint in clinical trials on the acute treatment of migraine. Probable migraine is a subtype of migraine that fulfills all but one criterion for migraine diagnosis. We aimed to compare the most bothersome symptom between probable migraine and migraine. This study analyzed data from a nationwide study conducted in Korea, and the most bothersome symptom was assessed by requesting the participants to select one of the four

SJR Q2Frontiers in NeurologyOA

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a prevalent sleep-related complaint across the general population and has been reported to be associated with headache. Tension-type headache (TTH) is the most commonly encountered headache and accounts for a significant amount of disease burden. However, the association between EDS and TTH is currently scarce. In the present study, we investigated the impact of EDS on the prevalence and clinical presentation of TTH. We utilized data from the Korean Headache
