About the Lab
Professor Kyung-seon Ryu's research lab specializes in Korean music history, with a particular focus on the compositional practices and cultural impact of 20th-century Korean composers. The lab explores the intersection of music, education, and national identity through in-depth archival research, especially on figures like Yun Ir-yeong, whose contributions to institutional music—such as university and school songs—have been historically underrecognized. The lab emphasizes the analysis of primary sources, including unpublished manuscripts, correspondence, and performance materials, to reconstruct the artistic and pedagogical intentions behind significant yet overlooked works. Current research also investigates the role of music in shaping national consciousness during mid-20th century Korea.

1유럽으로 유학을 떠나기 전까지 윤이상(1917-1995)은 작곡가로서 평론가로서, 그리고 음악교육자로서 국내에서 많은 활동을 하였다. 통영과 부산 지역의 총 16곳의 초․중․고교 교가를 작곡하였으며, 1953년 서울로 올라와 대학 강의를 하고 실내악과 가곡부분에 두드러진 창작활동을 전개하면서도 시인 조지훈(1920-1968)의 가사에 대학교의 교가를 작곡하였다. 필자가 재직 중인 고려대학교의 교가에 대한 사료들을 찾고 분석하는 과정에서 그간 음악계에는 전혀 알려지지 않은 윤이상이 직접 쓴 교가에 관한 글, 악보, 그리고 위촉의 정황 등이 담긴 기타 자료들을 찾을 수 있었다. 그리고 이를 통해 세계적인 현대음악 작곡가 윤이상이 단 한편의, 그러나 수세기 동안 불리울 교가의 작곡에도 가사의 효과적인 음악화를 위하여 얼마나 많은 고민과 노력을 기울였는지를 알 수 있었다. 윤이상의 해설 글은 한 장 정도로 간략했지만 교가 작곡을 의뢰받았을 때의 상황과 교가의 분석, 그리고 교가가 어떻게 불
