About the Lab

Professor Kyung-Sik Choi's research lab specializes in sedimentology and coastal geomorphology, focusing on tidal and estuarine systems in macrotidal environments. The lab investigates the interplay between tidal currents, river processes, and sedimentary structures such as inclined heterolithic stratification (IHS) and rhythmic climbing-ripple cross-lamination (RCRL) to understand coastal stratigraphy and morphodynamic evolution. Key research directions include tidal channel migration, intertidal sedimentation, and the interpretation of ancient tidal rhythmites in relation to modern analogs. The lab integrates field observations, high-precision surveying, and tidal cycle modeling to reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions and sedimentary architecture.

Sedimentology of Modern, Inclined Heterolithic Stratification (IHS) in the Macrotidal Han River Delta, Korea
Kyungsik Choi, Robert W. Dalrymple, Seung Soo Chun, Sung-Pil Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Sedimentary Research

Abstract An occurrence of inclined heterolithic stratification (IHS) is described from a tidal point bar in a 40-m-deep distributary of the macrotidal (tidal range 3.6-7.8 m), Han River delta, Korea. The channel bank demonstrates a convex-upward profile with intermittent presence of wave-formed scarps and terraces near the low-water level. The vertical succession of IHS is approximately 25 m thick and dips into the channel with angles reaching 14°. The IHS overlies 15 m of trough cross-bedded sa

Rhythmic Climbing-Ripple Cross-Lamination in Inclined Heterolithic Stratification (IHS) of a Macrotidal Estuarine Channel, Gomso Bay, West Coast of Korea
Kyungsik Choi
SJR Q1Journal of Sedimentary Research

Abstract Well-developed rhythmic climbing-ripple cross-lamination (RCRL) was described from estuarine tidal channels in Gomso Bay, west coast of Korea. Associated with upper intertidal point bars of closely spaced meandering channels, RCRL occurs between mean sea level and mean neap high-water level. RCRL is typically less than 40 cm thick, and constitutes the upper part of fining-upward channel-fill successions that are capped by intensely bioturbated mud. RCRL consists of mud-draped climbing-r

Morphodynamics of Tidal Channels In the Open Coast Macrotidal Flat, Southern Ganghwa Island In Gyeonggi Bay, West Coast of Korea
Kyungsik Choi, Jihyeon Jo
SJR Q1Journal of Sedimentary Research

Abstract: Morphodynamics of intertidal channels were monitored in order to understand their implication on the architecture of inclined heterolithic stratification (IHS) in the open-coast Yeochari macro tidal flat on southern Ganghwa Island in Gyeonggi Bay, west coast of Korea. The tidal flat is divisible into narrow salt marshes in the upper intertidal zone, a concave-up upper to middle intertidal zone with small tidal creeks, and a channelized lower intertidal zone. Channels in the lower inter

Late Pleistocene Tidal Rhythmites in Kyunggi Bay, West Coast of Korea: A Comparison with Simulated Rhythmites Based on Modern Tides and Implications for Intertidal Positioning
Kyungsik Choi, Byeoung-Man Kim, Y. A. Park
SJR Q1Journal of Sedimentary Research

Abstract Late Pleistocene silty tidal rhythmites in Kyunggi Bay, west coast of Korea, demonstrate various rhythmicities in lamina thickness associated with hierarchical tidal cycles ranging from semidiurnal to monthly (anomalistic) tidal variation. Such rhythmicities are very similar to those of modern tidal cycles in Kyunggi Bay, implying that late Pleistocene tides in Kyunggi Bay were similar to those of the present day. Hourly modern tides were analyzed as event series to simulate the late Pl
