About the Lab
Professor Kyungsook Choi's research lab focuses on pharmaceutical care, clinical pharmacy practice, and translational research in patient-centered healthcare. The lab investigates clinical pharmacy interventions to optimize medication therapy, particularly in specialized units such as neurocritical care, with an emphasis on improving patient outcomes and healthcare economics. Additionally, the lab explores diagnostic biomarkers, such as galactomannan in fungal infections, and contributes to evidence-based nutrition guidelines for diabetes management in the Korean population. The research integrates clinical pharmacy, health outcomes, and public health data to address real-world patient care challenges.

15BACKGROUND: The ability to communicate effectively is an essential skill for a pharmacist. However, the curricula of most pharmacy schools in South Korea do not include communication skills training (CST). This study aims to evaluate the effects of CST in pharmacy education. METHODS: This study was a comparison of pre- and post-intervention surveys completed by sixty fifth-year pharmacy students who participated in communication skills and patient counseling training during the spring 2017 semes
Outgrowth and patterning of the vertebrate limb requires a functional apical ectodermal ridge (AER). The AER is a thickening of ectodermal tissue located at the distal end of the limb bud. Loss of this structure, either through genetic or physical manipulations results in truncation of the limb. A number of genes, including Bmps, are expressed in the AER. Previously, it was shown that removal of the BMP receptor Bmpr1a specifically from the AER resulted in complete loss of hindlimbs suggesting t
Galactomannan (GM) is a polysaccharide cell wall component released by Aspergillus spp., and an immunoenzymatic GM assay is used for the diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. We evaluated the cause of strong positivity for GM in patients with no typical signs of aspergillosis. Repeat assays were performed using different instruments and reagent lots, but there were no differences in results among the assays. Patients with strongly positive GM results were investigated. Medication histor
The role of clinical pharmacists in medication therapy to improve clinical and economic outcomes has been reported in the literature. This study was conducted to analyze the changes in details of medication interventions before and after the introduction of clinical pharmacists into the care of neurocritical care unit (NCU) patients, and to evaluate the economic effects of clinical pharmacists by calculating the avoidance cost.
A food exchange system for diabetes is a useful tool for meal planning and nutritional education. The first edition of the Korean food exchange lists was developed in 1988 and the second edition was revised in 1995. With recent changes in the food marketplace and eating patterns of Koreans, the third edition of food exchange lists was revised in 2010 by the Korean Diabetes Association, the Korean Nutrition Society, the Korean Society of Community Nutrition, the Korean Dietetic Association and th
PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of rivaroxaban in thromboprophylaxis compared with those of aspirin in real-world patients who underwent hip arthroplasty using nationwide claims data. METHODS: Patients aged more than or equal to 18 years with at least one hip arthroplasty including total and partial hip replacements and hip replacement revisions during July 2009 to June 2013 were identified from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) database. The study outcome w
BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) patients usually experience mucositis, musculoskeletal pain associated with high-dose chemotherapy, radiation, post-HSCT infection, or graft-versus-host disease. Pain management is important for the patients' quality of life. We evaluated appropriate opioid analgesic use in HSCT patients to propose effective pain management strategies. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using electronic medical records of adult patients with

Objective: This report is describing the development and implementation process of the knowledge‐based renal dose adjustment system at a university hospital. Method: From the hospital drug formulary which included about 1500 medications, clinical pharmacists selected 243 nephrotoxic medications which require dose adjustment in patients with renal impairment. Through literature review and consultation of clinical pharmacists, nephrologist, and infectious disease specialist, we developed an accord
This study was conducted to develop expanding strategies of nutrition counseling in school foodservices. The study participants were 102 school dietitians in Gyeonggi province, and information on the current status, dietitians' necessity awareness, and practical activation needs for nutrition counseling were investigated. While 78.8% of dietitians were aware that nutrition counseling was in need, it was only 31.3% who understood the necessity of nutrition counseling. The implementation rate of s
Background Management of antiplatelet agents and other chronic anticoagulation medications in patients scheduled for surgery can reduce intraoperative bleeding complications . However, few studies on the association of antithrombotics , relative to their duration of action, with intraoperative transfusion have been conducted. We aimed to determine the association of recent use of antithrombotics, relative to their duration of action, with intraoperative transfusion in elderly people undergoing c
