About the Lab

Professor Kyungsu Seok's research lab specializes in spinal deformity correction, cervical spine biomechanics, and surgical outcomes in degenerative and inflammatory spinal conditions. The lab focuses on optimizing spinal alignment through quantitative radiographic analysis, particularly in patients with ankylosing spondylitis and cervical spondylosis, and investigates surgical techniques such as laminoplasty and pedicle subtraction osteotomy. The Influence of Thoracic Inlet Alignment on the Craniocervical Sagittal Balance in Asymptomatic Adults

The thoracic inlet alignment had significant correlations with craniocervical sagittal balance. To preserve physiological NT around 44 degrees, large TIA increased T1 slope and CL and vice versa. TIA and T1 slope could be used as parameters to predict physiological alignment of the cervical spine. The results of this study may serve as baseline data for the evaluation of sagittal balance or planning of a fusion angle in the cervical spine.

Recurrent Lumbar Disc Herniation

Conventional open discectomy as a revision surgery for recurrent lumbar disc herniation showed satisfactory results that were comparable with those of primary discectomy. Based on the results of this study, repeat discectomy can be recommended for the management of recurrent lumbar disc herniation.

Sagittal Alignment of the Cervical Spine After the Laminoplasty

ROM of the cervical spine decreased by 30.5% after laminoplasty. Kyphosis was developed in 10.6% of the patients. The preoperative factors affecting postoperative kyphosis are diagnosis of myelopathy cases associated with cervical spondylosis, a lordosis angle of <10 degrees, and a kyphotic angle during flexion that is larger than a lordotic angle during extension.

Unilateral Versus Bilateral Pedicle Screw Fixation in Lumbar Spinal Fusion

Unilateral pedicle screw fixation was as effective as bilateral pedicle screw fixation in lumbar spinal fusion independent of the number of fusion segments (one or two segments) or pedicle screw systems. The Quantitative Analysis of Tissue Injury Markers After Mini-Open Lumbar Fusion

Cervical Pedicle Screw Placement Using the “Key Slot Technique”

We performed CPS placement using the KS technique and with 90% correct position without clinical complications. After the learning curve, the incidence was 2.7%. This technique could be considered relatively concrete and safe modification of conventional technique with minimal bone loss.

Sagittal Decompensation After Corrective Osteotomy for Lumbar Degenerative Kyphosis

The mean sagittal decompensation after corrective osteotomy for LDK was 38.3%. The etiology was loss of lumbosacral lordosis in Group L and progression of kyphosis at the proximal unfused segments in addition to lumbosacral loss in Group T. The decompensation was greater in the thoracic type than in the lumbar type and was considered relevant to a large preoperative thoracic kyphotic angle, absence of compensatory thoracic lordosis, and atrophy of paravertebral muscles.
