About the Lab

Professor Lee Hyeonju's research lab focuses on molecular and translational biology, with key research directions in proteostasis and neurodegenerative diseases, particularly the role of proteasome activation in aging and protein aggregation. The lab also investigates host immunity and seroepidemiology of viral infections such as hepatitis A and varicella-zoster virus in the Korean population. Additionally, the lab explores psychological and societal dimensions of science communication, especially public perception and trust in nuclear and environmental technologies. These interdisciplinary efforts bridge molecular mechanisms with population health and social psychology.

Cold temperature extends longevity and prevents disease-related protein aggregation through PA28γ-induced proteasomes

SJR Q1Nature AgingOA

Aging is a primary risk factor for neurodegenerative disorders that involve protein aggregation. Because lowering body temperature is one of the most effective mechanisms to extend longevity in both poikilotherms and homeotherms, a better understanding of cold-induced changes can lead to converging modifiers of pathological protein aggregation. Here, we find that cold temperature (15 °C) selectively induces the trypsin-like activity of the proteasome in Caenorhabditis elegans through PSME-3, the

Seroepidemiology of Hepatitis A in Korea: Changes over the Past 30 Years
Journal of Korean Medical Science

This study aimed to assess the immune status of the Korean population against hepatitis A virus (HAV). Residual serum samples from 2008 to 2010 were collected from diagnostic laboratories and a total of 1,872 samples were analyzed. Anti-HAV seroprevalence was 57.3% in subjects aged 1-4 yr, 69.8% at 5-9 yr and decreased to 38.8% at 10-14 yr,13.0% at 15-19 yr, and 11.7% at 20-29 yr. Seroprevalence increased with increasing age:52.2% at 30-39 yr, 83.2% at 40-49 yr, 81.4% at 50-59 yr, 93.2% at 60-69

Environmental orientation in going green: A qualitative approach to consumer psychology and sociocultural factors of green consumption
Hyun Ju Lee, Seong-Yeon Park
SJR Q1Journal of Global Scholars of Marketing Science

AbstractGreen consumption culture is gaining momentum on the part of both individuals and communities, and also is reflected in marketing strategies. This research aims to examine consumer psychology and external factors that underlie green consumption. Focus groups and in-depth interviews were conducted to gather data to analyze consumer psychology and behavior. Focus groups and in-depth interviews are examples of qualitative approaches which contribute to drawing out information and understand

Achieving Ultralow, Zero, and Inverted Tunneling Attenuation Coefficients in Molecular Wires with Extended Conjugation
Hyun Ju Lee, Soo Jin Cho, Hungu Kang, Xin He, Hyo Jae Yoon
SJR Q1Small

Molecular tunnel junctions are organic devices miniaturized to the molecular scale. They serve as a versatile toolbox that can systematically examine charge transport behaviors at the atomic level. The electrical conductance of the molecular wire that bridges the two electrodes in a junction is significantly influenced by its chemical structure, and an intrinsically poor conductance is a major barrier for practical applications toward integrating individual molecules into electronic circuitry. Seroepidemiology of Varicella-Zoster Virus in Korea
Journal of Korean Medical Science

This study was designed to assess the immune status of the Korean population against varicella-zoster virus (VZV) through a seroepidemiologic study. Residual blood samples were collected from diagnostic laboratories throughout Korea. Samples were collected in October 2009 to March 2010 from persons 0-79 yr of age and were tested by ELISA (Enzygnost®; Dade Behring, Schwalbach, Germany). Total seroprevalence in subjects 1-79yr of age was 89.6%. Seroprevalence increased as age increased from 67.3%

Improved ferroelectric property of very thin Mn-doped BiFeO3 films by an inlaid Al2O3 tunnel switch
Hyun Ju Lee, Min Hyuk Park, Yu Jin Kim, Cheol Seong Hwang, Jeong Hwan Kim, Hiroshi Funakubo, Hiroshi Ishiwara
SJR Q2Journal of Applied Physics

A thin Al2O3 layer was atomic layer deposited on a 50 - or 70 nm-thick, polycrystalline Mn-doped BiFeO3 (BFMO) thin film to fabricate a dielectric/ferroelectric bi-layer capacitor. The thin Al2O3 layer worked as a tunnel switch to improve the ferroelectric performance of the BFMO films. The BFMO thin film and BiFeO3 film contains a high density of charged defects, such as oxygen vacancies, Bi vacancies, and Fe2+ ions reduced from Fe3+, which induce a large leakage current and cause instability o
