About the Lab
Professor Lee Kiheon's research lab focuses on population health and preventive medicine, with a strong emphasis on aging, metabolic diseases, and chronic condition management in the Korean population. Key research directions include the epidemiology of smoking behaviors—particularly dual use of e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes—cardiometabolic risk factors, medication adherence in older adults, and the role of systemic inflammation in diabetic complications such as diabetic retinopathy. The lab also investigates bone health in relation to insulin resistance and the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications among elderly populations.

15Most smokers who use electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) to stop smoking simultaneously use conventional cigarettes (dual users). We aimed to compare the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors among dual users, cigarette-only smokers, and never smokers in Korean men. We used data acquired from Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013-2017) pertaining to 7,505 male participants aged 19 years or older. About 85% of e-cigarette users were dual users. Dual users had greater
To improve medication adherence of elderly living alone, it is essential to identify barriers to adherence, including their concerns and attitudes toward medications. These factors associated with adherence should be considered in further intervention studies.
Elevated systemic neutrophil count is associated with the presence and severity of DR as well as diabetes. This result indicates that systemic subclinical inflammation is related with DR, and neutrophil-mediated inflammation may play an important role in the pathogenesis of DR.
CONTEXT: The association between insulin resistance and bone mass is still not clear. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between insulin resistance and bone mass. DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a cross-sectional survey of the nationally representative population. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 3113 men (aged ≥20 years) from the fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 2008-2009 were included. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Bone mineral density (BMD) was
BACKGROUND: Despite evidence that breast cancer screening reduces morbidity and mortality, until recently most women have not undergone regular mammogram examinations in Korea. We aimed to identify factors associated with use of breast cancer screening services. METHODS: The Health Promotion Knowledge, Attitude and Practice survey (HP-KAP survey) is part of the Third Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005 (KNHANES III), a nationwide health survey in Korea. Of 7,802 individua
BACKGROUND: A high number of elderly people with multiple comorbidities are exposed to the risk of polypharmacy and prescription of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM). The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and patterns of PIM prescription in Korean older adults according to the 2012 Beers Criteria. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted using data from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment (KHIRA) database of outpatient prescription claims collected
Aims: This study aimed to investigate the association between smoking cessation, post-cessation body mass index (BMI) change and risk of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke in men. Methods and results: A prospective cohort study using the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) data set collected from 2002 to 2013 was implemented. Based on the first (2002-03) and second (2004-05) NHIS health check-up periods, 108 242 men aged over 40 years without previous diagnoses of MI or stroke were group
Breast cancer is the second most common malignancy among Korean women. The 2002 National Cancer Center screening guideline breast cancer was revised via an evidence-based approach to provide medical personnel with a standard protocol of screening breast cancer. There is moderate-level evidence that biennial screening mammography in asymptomatic women aged 40 to 69 reduces breast cancer mortality, while low-level evidence suggests that screening mammography in women 70 years or older does not red
Laparoscopic surgery seems to be adequate and feasible for the treatment of early-stage ovarian cancer with comparable results to laparotomy in terms of the surgical outcomes and oncological safety.
Targeted interventions for vulnerable populations and public campaigns about preventive medical evaluation are needed to increase gastric cancer screening participation and reduce gastric cancer mortality.
BACKGROUND: It is well known that cancer greatly affects not only patients but also their families. However, few studies on caregivers' quality of life have been conducted within the Asian population. METHODS: We carried out a survey using well-constructed, self-administered questionnaires that were answered by pairs of patients with cancer and their spouse-caregivers (n=100 pairs) who were visiting the cancer daycare center at Seoul National University Hospital. The caregiver's quality of life
OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between secondhand smoke exposure and blood lead and cadmium concentration in women in South Korea. DESIGN: Population-based cross-sectional study. SETTING: South Korea (Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey V). PARTICIPANTS: 1490 non-smoking women who took part in the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010-2012), in which blood levels of lead and cadmium were measured. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcom
BACKGROUND: While smoking elevates the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) among atrial fibrillation (AF) patients, whether smoking cessation after AF diagnosis actually leads to reduced CVD risk is unclear. We aimed to determine the association of smoking cessation after AF diagnosis with subsequent CVD Risk among South Korean men. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 2372 newly diagnosed AF male patients during 2003-2012 from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database
