About the Lab
Professor Man-jong Baek's research lab specializes in cardiovascular and biomedical engineering, focusing on improving the durability and biocompatibility of biological tissues for cardiac prostheses. The lab investigates novel chemical modifications of tissues—such as sulfonated PEO and heparin grafting on glutaraldehyde-fixed bovine pericardium—to enhance calcification resistance and mechanical stability. Additionally, the lab conducts clinical and epidemiological studies on metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, particularly examining the long-term impact of hyperuricaemia and diabetes on type 2 diabetes mellitus and major adverse cardiac events. The research integrates biomaterials science with interventional cardiology, including outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention in complex coronary syndromes like chronic total occlusion.

CAS incidence is closely related to exposure to PMs but not to gaseous pollutants. Particularly, higher exposure concentrations and longer exposure duration of PM10 increased the risk of CAS. These important findings provide a plausible mechanism that links air pollution to vasospastic angina and provide new insights into environmental factors.
