About the Lab

Professor Min Gu Park's research lab focuses on translational urology and male reproductive health, with a strong emphasis on the interplay between hormonal status, microbiome dynamics, and urological conditions. Key research directions include the clinical impact of testosterone deficiency in chronic kidney disease, the role of vitamin D in lower urinary tract symptoms and hypogonadism, and the influence of lifestyle factors such as smoking on erectile function. The lab also investigates the emerging role of the urinary microbiome and its interactions with the gut and vaginal microbiomes, particularly in postmenopausal women, and explores cellular mechanisms such as calcium signaling in neural stem cells. These multidisciplinary efforts aim to improve quality of life through non-invasive, cost-effective interventions and personalized therapeutic strategies.

Listening to Music During Cystoscopy Decreases Anxiety, Pain, and Dissatisfaction in Patients: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial
Jeong Kyun Yeo, Dae Yeon Cho, Mi Mi Oh, Seok San Park, Min Gu Park
SJR Q1Journal of EndourologyOA

PURPOSE: To determine whether listening to music during cystoscopy decreases anxiety, pain, and dissatisfaction among patients and results in a more comfortable and better-tolerated procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy male patients who underwent rigid cystoscopy between May 2011 and December 2011 were randomized into the following: no music (Group I, n=35) or classical music during procedure (Group II, n=35). Before cystoscopy, lidocaine gel was instilled in the urethra, and both groups vi

Menopausal Changes in the Microbiome—A Review Focused on the Genitourinary Microbiome
Min Gu Park, Seok Cho, Mi Mi Oh
SJR Q2DiagnosticsOA

A balanced interaction between the host and its microbiome is crucial to health. Research regarding the significance of the gut and vaginal microbiomes in female health is substantial. However, less data regarding the urinary microbiome are available. Interactions between the gut, vaginal, and urinary microbiomes are also currently being researched. Hormone-induced dysbiosis after menopause is believed to have effects on physical changes and health consequences. Postmenopausal changes in the gut

Flow Shear Stress Enhances the Proliferative Potential of Cultured Radial Glial Cells Possibly Via an Activation of Mechanosensitive Calcium Channel
Min Gu Park, Heeyeong Jang, Sang‐Hoon Lee, C. Justin Lee
SJR Q2Experimental NeurobiologyOA

Radial glial cells (RGCs) which function as neural stem cells are known to be non-excitable and their proliferation depends on the intracellular calcium (Ca2+) level. It has been well established that Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3)-mediated Ca2+ release and Ca2+ entry through various Ca2+ channels are involved in the proliferation of RGCs. Furthermore, RGCs line the ventricular wall and are exposed to a shear stress due to a physical con

Effects of Testosterone Treatment on Quality of Life in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease
Jeong Kyun Yeo, Hoseok Koo, Jihyeong Yu, Min Gu Park
SJR Q1American Journal of Men s HealthOA

Testosterone deficiency (TD) is common and impairs quality of life (QoL) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, there are no studies about whether testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) can improve QoL in patients with CKD. Therefore, we investigated the effect of TRT on the QoL of patients with CKD and confirmed the safety of TRT. Twenty-five male patients with stages III-IV CKD whose serum testosterone levels were <350 ng/dl (TD) were enrolled and treated with testosterone gel

SJR Q1The Journal of Sexual Medicine

INTRODUCTION: Both testosterone therapy and chronic treatment with phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5Is) have positive effects on the histology of penile corpora and erectile function. However, few clinical studies have evaluated the efficacy of combination therapy with both testosterone replacement and chronic PDE5Is. AIM: This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of combination treatment with long-acting injectable testosterone undecanoate (TU) and a once-daily tadalaf

Changes in Awake Cystometry and Expression of Bladder β-adrenoceptors after Partial Bladder Outlet Obstruction in Male Rats
Min Gu Park, Hong Seok Park, Jeong Gu Lee, Hyung Jee Kim
SJR Q2International Neurourology JournalOA

PBOO of male rats increase the maximal intravesical pressure and contraction time during micturition and the frequency of non-void contraction as well as weight of bladder. The expression of β2- and 3-ARs subtypes was increased insignificantly compared to sham operated group. This study demonstrates that the changes of cystometric or non-void contraction parameters in pBOO is one of the pathophysiologic processes potentially associated with the alterations of bladder β-ARs.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical and microbiological features in the patients with community-acquired acute bacterial prostatitis (CA-ABP), as well as factors that affect fluoroquinolone resistance. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of 209 patients hospitalized for antibiotic treatment of CA-ABP. We investigated patient age, body mass index, underlying diseases, recurrence, prostate-related factors and results of urine culture examination and antibiotic sensitivity tests. RE

OBJECTIVES: To compare the antibiotic susceptibility of Escherichia coli (E. coli) between community- acquired acute bacterial prostatitis (CA-ABP) and ABP following transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy (Bx-ABP). METHODS: A total of 4,383 patients underwent prostate biopsy from January 2005 to June 2014. Among these patients, 34 had Bx-ABP; of which 22 patients had E. coli identified in their urine or blood culture. E. coli was also identified in 91 out of 209 patients with CA-ABP in ur

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

There is no conclusive evidence as to whether patients with testosterone deficiency (TD) who benefit from testosterone treatment (TRT) must continue the treatment for the rest of their lives. In some patients, the effect of TRT does not maintained after stopping TRT and, some patients show no significant TD symptoms, with normal testosterone levels after TRT cessation. Therefore, we investigated the predictive factors of response maintenance after TRT cessation. A total of 151 men with TD who re
