About the Lab
Professor Min-Sung Jeong's research lab focuses on translational oncology and surgical outcomes, with a strong emphasis on understanding the biological and clinical factors influencing cancer recurrence, survival, and postoperative morbidity. Key research directions include the impact of perioperative blood transfusions on oncological outcomes, the role of systemic inflammation (via the Dietary Inflammatory Index) in breast cancer progression, and the molecular mechanisms involving transcription factors like FOXO in triple-negative breast cancer. The lab also investigates surgical complications, particularly shoulder morbidity after mastectomy with TRAM flap reconstruction, and explores novel, radiation-free methods for assessing swallowing function using thyroid cartilage movement as a surrogate for hyoid bone motion. These studies reflect a multidisciplinary approach integrating clinical surgery, molecular pathology, and patient-centered outcomes research.

15The degree of immunomodulation by perioperative blood transfusion and its effect on oncological surgery remain controversial. A major problem with previous clinical studies has been the inadequate patient population in each and the presence of confounding variables. To resolve some of the controversy, all studies published between 1982 and 1990 were reviewed using the statistical method of Mantel-Haentszel-Peto to determine a cumulative estimate of the direction and magnitude of this association
The dietary inflammatory index (DII) has been associated with breast cancer incidence and survival. However, the association between DII and cancer recurrence and mortality among patients with breast cancer has not been investigated. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate whether DII was positively associated with risk for cancer recurrence and overall mortality among patients with breast cancer. Among 511 women (51.9 ± 10.7 years; stage 0⁻3) who underwent breast cancer surgery, 88 ha
Aims Forkhead box O (FOXO) transcription factors, consisting of FOXO1, FOXO3a, FOXO4 and FOXO6, are involved in carcinogenesis and tumour progression. Recent studies have suggested that FOXOs act as tumour suppressors in a variety of human cancers. This study investigated the clinicopathological significance of FOXOs in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Methods FOXO protein expressions were assessed by immunohistochemistry in 125 TNBC tissues. Correlations between FOXO protein expression and
BACKGROUND: To compare shoulder morbidity between patients who received transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flaps after mastectomy (MX + TRAM) and patients who underwent mastectomy only (MX). METHODS: Thirty patients in each group were followed for a minimum of 2 postoperative years. Visual analog scale (VAS) score, restricted range of motion (ROM), rotator cuff disease, muscle strength, shoulder function scores (American Shoulder and Elbow Score and Shoulder Pain and Disability Inde
INTRODUCTION: Hyoid bone movement can be useful for diagnosing oropharyngeal dysphagia. In most clinical settings, the movement can be evaluated by a video fluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) that induces radiation exposure. In contrast with the hyoid bone, the thyroid cartilage is easily seen through the anterior neck surface. We hypothesized that the movement of thyroid cartilage correlates with hyoid bone movement in various axis and can be used as a parameter to evaluate swallowing. The pur
Intake of flavonoids is associated with the incidence of breast cancer, but the association between the intake of flavonoids and cancer recurrence is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the hypothesis that intake of flavonoids and flavonoid-rich foods is negatively associated with cancer recurrence. Among 572 women who underwent breast cancer surgery, 66 patients had a cancer recurrence. Dietary data were collected using a structured 24-h dietary recall, and intake of flavonoids was calcula
Small cell carcinoma (SCC) of the pancreas is rare. It has similar histological features to pulmonary small cell carcinoma and is equally aggressive. Most patients with SCC in the pancreas reported in case studies died within 1 year after diagnosis. We present a case of unusually long-term survival after surgery and combined chemotherapy for SCC of the pancreas. A 62-year-old woman presented with epigastric pain and jaundice. Computed tomography revealed dilated common bile duct caused by extern
BACKGROUND: Since the publication of the Z0011 trial, practice-changing clinical guidelines for breast surgery have been developed. Although recent studies confirmed the feasibility of the Z0011 strategy in Asian populations, there has been no study on the trends of axillary surgery in Asian cohort. This study aimed to investigate the time trend of axillary surgery for breast cancer from a Korean Breast Cancer Registry to understand the impact of the Z0011 trial in Asian patients. METHODS: We co
Mechanisms of technetium-99m sesta-methoxyisobutylisonitrile (sestamibi) and F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake by tumor are different. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between the tumor uptake of these 2 tracers in invasive ductal carcinoma and to examine thecorrelation of uptake of each tracer with prognostic factors and tumor molecular subtypes.A total of 96 patients with invasive ductal carcinoma who underwent preoperative breast-specific gamma imaging and FDG posi
Antioxidants decrease the risk of breast cancer by reducing oxidative stress, but the association between dietary total antioxidant capacity (DTAC) and cancer recurrence has not yet been investigated. The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that DTAC is inversely associated with cancer recurrence and mortality in breast cancer patients. Breast cancer patients (<i>n</i> = 603) who underwent breast cancer surgery and a dietary survey within 5 years after surgery were recruited. This study o
