About the Lab
Professor Min Whan Jung's research lab focuses on the neural mechanisms underlying learning, memory, and decision-making, with a particular emphasis on the hippocampus and basal ganglia. The lab investigates how synaptic plasticity, neuronal activity patterns, and endogenous or exogenous compounds (such as ginsenosides and asiaticoside derivatives) modulate cognitive functions and protect against neurodegeneration. Using behavioral tasks, electrophysiology, and molecular analyses in rodent models, the lab explores the roles of specific neural circuits in spatial memory, reward processing, and neuroprotection. Their work bridges systems neuroscience with translational approaches to identify potential therapeutic targets for cognitive disorders.

15Single neuron activity was recorded in the granular layer of the fascia dentata in freely moving rats, while the animals performed a spatial "working" memory task on an eight-arm maze. Using recording methods that facilitate detection of units with low discharge rates, it was found that the majority (88%) of cells in this layer have mean rates below 0.5 Hz, with a minimum of 0.01 Hz or less. The remaining recorded cells exhibited characteristics typical of the theta interneurons found throughout
We investigated the cognition enhancing effects of ginsenoside Rb1 and Rg1. Mice were trained in a Morris water maze following injection (i.p.) of Rb1 (1 mg/kg) or Rg1 (1 mg/kg) for 4 days. Both Rb1- and Rg1-injected mice showed enhanced spatial learning compared to control animals. The hippocampus, but not the frontal cortex, of treated mice contained higher density of a synaptic marker protein, synaptophysin, compared to control mice. Electrophysiological recordings in hippocampal slices revea
Asiaticoside (AS) derivatives were tested for potential protective effects against Abeta-induced cell death. Of the 28 AS derivatives tested, asiatic acid (AA), asiaticoside 6 (AS6), and SM2 showed strong inhibition of Abeta-induced death of B103 cells at 1 microM. The three AS derivatives were further tested for their effects on free radical injury and apoptosis. All three AS derivatives reduced H(2)O(2)-induced cell death and lowered intracellular free radical concentration, but AA showed the
Induction of long-term potentiation (LTP) by burst stimulation patterned after the limbic system theta rhythm was studied in slices of piriform cortex. Monosynaptic responses were evoked by stimulation of afferent fibers of the lateral olfactory tract (LOT) or the intrinsic associational (ASSN) feedback system. LTP was difficult to elicit at LOT synapses in the presence of 2.5 mM extracellular Mg2+, and when it was induced potentiation increased for 20-30 min after burst stimulation before stabi
The direct and indirect pathways of the basal ganglia have long been thought to mediate behavioral promotion and inhibition, respectively. However, this classic dichotomous model has been recently challenged. To better understand neural processes underlying reward-based learning and movement control, we recorded from direct (dSPNs) and indirect (iSPNs) pathway spiny projection neurons in the dorsomedial striatum of D1-Cre and D2-Cre mice performing a probabilistic Pavlovian conditioning task. dS
The extent of external and internal factors contributing to location-specific firing of hippocampal place cells is currently unclear. We investigated the role of active movement in location-specific firing by comparing spatial firing patterns of hippocampal neurons, while rats either ran freely or rode a motorized cart on the same circular track. Most neurons changed their spatial firing patterns across the two navigation conditions ("remapping"), and they were stably maintained across repeated
The relationship among discharges of neurons that were recorded simultaneously with tetrodes in the rat medial prefrontal cortex was analyzed. Spatial working memory tasks were divided into several distinct stages based on the behavioral correlates of individual neurons, and interneuronal correlation of signal (mean discharge rate at each stage) and noise (trial-to-trial deviation from the signal) was calculated. Behavioral correlates of neighboring neurons were quite heterogeneous and, accordin
