About the Lab

Professor Minjeong Kim's research lab focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying cancer progression, with a particular emphasis on autophagy in oncogenic transformation, especially in K-Ras-driven malignancies. The lab also investigates fungal pathogenesis, particularly the role of zinc homeostasis and transcription factors like Csr1 in Candida albicans filamentation and virulence. In addition, the lab conducts clinical and health services research, analyzing surgical outcomes and cost-effectiveness in spinal disorders under national health insurance systems. A growing focus is on the biological and neurochemical links between metabolic disease and mental health, using preclinical models to explore biomarkers for obesity-associated mood disorders.

SJR Q1Journal of Biological ChemistryOA

Autophagy has recently been implicated in both the prevention and progression of cancer. However, the molecular basis for the relationship between autophagy induction and the initial acquisition of malignancy is currently unknown. Here, we provide the first evidence that autophagy is essential for oncogenic K-Ras (K-Ras(V12))-induced malignant cell transformation. Retroviral expression of K-Ras(V12) induced autophagic vacuole formation and malignant transformation in human breast epithelial cell

Roles of Zinc-responsive transcription factor Csr1 in filamentous growth of the pathogenic Yeast Candida albicans.

PubMed

In the fungal pathogen Candida albicans, the yeast-to-hyphal transition occurs in response to a broad range of environmental stimuli and is considered to be a major virulence factor. To address whether the zinc homeostasis affects the growth or pathogenicity of C. albicans, we functionally characterized the zinc-finger protein Csr1 during filamentation. The deduced amino acid sequence of Csr1 showed a 49% similarity to the zinc-specific transcription factor, Zap1 of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Seq

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of the present study were to examine the changes in the number of surgeries, surgical methods selected, and reoperation rates between the years 2003 and 2008. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The selection of the appropriate surgical method between decompression-only (D) and decompression plus fusion (DF) represents a challenging clinical dilemma in patients with degenerative lumbar spinal spondylolisthesis. DF is selected in great

SJR Q1Biomolecules & TherapeuticsOA

Obesity is one of the most serious health problems in developed countries. It negatively affects diverse aspects of human wellbeing. Of these, a relationship between obesity and depression is widely recognized but biomarkers for assessment of obesityassociated mood changes in animal obesity models are rarely known. Here we explored the link between obesity and the plasma levels of monoamine neurotransmitters involved in mood control using a sensitive UPLC/MSMS technique in high fat diet (HFD)- i

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to investigate the impact of polymorphisms in the AKT1 gene on the survival of early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. METHODS: Three hundred and ten patients with surgically resected NSCLC were enrolled. The rs3803300, rs1130214, rs3730358, rs1130233, and rs2494732 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the AKT1 gene were investigated. The genotype and haplotype associations with overall survival (OS) and disease free survi

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has improved, and the adverse effects of antiretroviral drugs have been reduced. However, these adverse effects still significantly influence patient compliance, increasing the risk of tolerability failure. Therefore, we investigated the adverse effects and tolerability failure causing changes in the first ART regimen, and identified the regimens that were most vulnerable to switching. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled patients with human

A General Fast Registration Framework by Learning Deformation–Appearance Correlation
Min Jeong Kim, Guo‐Rong Wu, Pew-Thian Yap, Dinggang Shen
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Image Processing

In this paper, we propose a general framework for performance improvement of the current state-of-the-art registration algorithms in terms of both accuracy and computation time. The key concept involves rapid prediction of a deformation field for registration initialization, which is achieved by a statistical correlation model learned between image appearances and deformation fields. This allows us to immediately bring a template image as close as possible to a subject image that we need to regi

The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between forms of children's solitary play and temperament, problem behaviors. Seventy-six children of four-year-olds were observed during free play. Children's temperament was measured by mothers of participants. Children's problem behaviors were measured by teachers. Following from Coplan et al(1994), this study were analyzed three aggregate measures of solitary play consisting of reticent behavior, solitary-passive play, and solitary-active
