About the Lab
Professor Minsu Kim's research lab focuses on neuroimmunology and dermatological therapeutics, with a strong emphasis on microglial function in central nervous system disorders and the development of novel treatments for inflammatory and pigmentation-related skin conditions. The lab investigates microglia-astrocyte crosstalk in neuroinflammatory environments, such as those mimicking brain stroke, and explores the neuroprotective potential of antioxidants like α-lipoic acid. Additionally, the lab is actively researching advanced laser technologies—particularly the 1927 nm fractional thulium fiber laser—for treating refractory skin diseases like Riehl's melanosis and for skin rejuvenation in combination with fractional microneedle radiofrequency. The lab also examines genetic factors influencing postoperative outcomes, such as the efficacy of ondansetron in preventing nausea and vomiting after surgery.

15Microglia are resident immune cells of the central nervous system that act as brain-specific macrophages and are also known to regulate the innate immune functions of astrocytes through secretory molecules. This communication plays an important role in brain functions and homeostasis as well as in neuropathologic disease. In this study, we aimed to elucidate whether astrocytes and microglia could crosstalk to induce microglial polarization and proliferation, which can be further regulated under
Microglial cells are known as the main immune cells in the central nervous system, both regulating its immune response and maintaining its homeostasis. Furthermore, the antioxidant α-lipoic acid (LA) is a recognized therapeutic drug for diabetes because it can easily invade the blood-brain barrier. This study investigated the effect of α-LA on the inflammatory response in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated BV-2 microglial cells. Our results revealed that α-LA significantly attenuated several infla
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The treatment of Riehl's melanosis, also known as pigmented contact dermatitis, is highly challenging. Intense pulsed light (IPL) and 1064 nm Q-switched Nd:Yag (QS-Nd:YAG) laser are reported to have some efficacy. However, no single effective treatment has yet been identified. In this study, we demonstrated the efficacy and safety of the non-ablative 1927 nm fractional thulium fiber laser (TFL, LASEMD™; Lutronic Corp., Goyang, Korea) for patients with Riehl's melanosis
BACKGROUND: Fractional microneedle radiofrequency (FMR) and nonablative 1927-nm fractional thulium fiber laser (TFL) are widely used for skin rejuvenation treatment. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the efficacy and safety of combined treatment with both devices for wrinkles. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-five patients with wrinkles were enrolled. One side of the face was treated with FMR alone, while the other side was treated with a combination of FMR and TFL. Each treatment consisted of 3 sessions a
Purpose: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common problem after general anesthesia. Although 5-hydroxytryptaminetype 3 (5-HT3) receptor antagonists have significantly reduced PONV, over 35% of patients treated with ondansetron can experience PONV. In this study, we investigated whether the Y129S and -100_-102AAG deletion polymorphisms of the 5-HT3B receptor gene affect the efficacy of ondansetron in preventing PONV. Materials and Methods: Two hundred and forty-five adult patients who
Neurological complications are important causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. They can occur at any stage of the disease and can affect any level of the central or peripheral nervous systems. In the literature, several cases of HIV-associated facial paralysis have been reported; however, bilateral facial palsy is rarely reported. In this paper, we present the first case in Korea, of a bilateral facial palsy occurring as the first clinic
Purpose: Supraglottic airway devices have been widely utilized as an alternative to tracheal intubation in various clinical situations. The rotation technique has been proposed to improve the insertion success rate of supraglottic airways. However, the clinicalefficacy of this technique remains uncertain as previous results have been inconsistent, depending on the variable evaluated. Materials and Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled
Purpose: This study was designed as a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that included the comparison of palonosetron and ramosetron for postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) prophylaxis. Materials and Methods: A systematic search was conducted for the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, CENTRAL, KoreaMed, and Google Scholar databases (PROSPERO protocol number CRD42015026009). Primary outcomes were the incidences of postoperativenausea (PON) and postoperative vomiting (POV) duri
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the osseointegration of calcium phosphate (CaP)-coated implants by ion beam assisted deposition with a lack of primary stability. Methods: A total of 20 CaP-coated implants were bilaterally placed in the mandible of five dogs. In the rotational implant group, the implants were inserted in oversized drilled sockets without mechanical engagement, while the conventional surgical protocol was followed in the control group. Each group was allowed to

This was to explore the female college students' initial and continuous motivations for boxing participation. It play a great role in understanding the relationship among Korean culture, female sport and boxing participation. In initial motivation, curisity, desire of belonging, and need of exercise were manifested. As continuous motivation, interest, individual direction, desire of learning, and human tie were emerged. In order to enhance female's boxing participation, the female boxing program
Size selection of the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) Classic based on actual body weight remains a common practice. However, ideal body weight might allow for a better size selection in obese patients. The purpose of our study was to compare the utility of ideal body weight and actual body weight when choosing the appropriate size of the LMA Classic by a randomized clinical trial. One hundred patients with age 20 to 70 yr, body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2, and the difference between LMA sizes based on ac
Fungi rarely cause disease in individuals with normal immunity. However, fungi present in the normal biota of the skin, mucous membranes, intestinal tract, and fungi in the environment that are normally non-pathogenic, can cause life-threatening infections in individuals with suppressed immunity. In the past decades, the prevalence of opportunistic fungal infections has increased, and these are associated with lowered immunity due to chemotherapy, HIV infection, and aging. The development of tra
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate 2 years cumulative survival rate of implants on augmented sinus area using MBCP, mixture of MBCP and ICB, and mixture of MBCP and autogenous bone by means of clinical and radiologic methods. Materials and Methods: In a total of 37 patients, 41 maxillary sinuses were augmented and 89 implant fixtures were installed simultaneously or after a regular healing period. The patients were divided in 3 groups: MBCP only, MBCP combined with ICB, MBCP comb
