About the Lab

Professor Nam Hee Kim's research lab focuses on environmental toxicology and metabolic disease epidemiology, with a particular emphasis on the health impacts of low-level heavy metal exposure—such as lead, mercury, and cadmium—on renal and liver function in the general population. The lab investigates the associations between environmental pollutants, biomarkers of exposure (e.g., blood and urinary levels), and chronic diseases like chronic kidney disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and pancreatic cancer. Using large-scale, nationally representative cohort data such as KNHANES and objective biomarkers like urinary cotinine, the lab aims to clarify controversial associations in environmental health science. Their work also extends to gastrointestinal oncology, particularly the role of tumor markers in colorectal neoplasia and cancer progression.

Environmental Heavy Metal Exposure and Chronic Kidney Disease in the General Population

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and cadmium (Cd) are common heavy metal toxins and cause toxicological renal effects at high levels, but the relevance of low-level environmental exposures in the general population is controversial. A total of 1,797 adults who participated in the KNHANES (a cross-sectional nationally representative survey in Korea) were examined, and 128 of them (7.1%) had chronic kidney disease (CKD). Our study assessed the association between Pb, Hg, Cd exposure, and CKD. Blood Pb and

One-quarter of neoplastic polyps was missed during colonoscopy. We encourage endoscopists to detect smaller and flat or sessile polyps by using the optimal withdrawal technique.

SJR Q2Yonsei Medical JournalOA

Both elevated serum CEA and CA 19-9 levels were associated with the presence of ACRN, as well as CRC. Elevated CEA levels were also associated with the presence of overall CRN. Moreover, both CEA and CA 19-9 levels were correlated with the severity of CRN.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The relationship between cigarette smoking and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been controversial. Most relevant studies have relied on self-reported questionnaires. We aimed to elucidate the association between smoking status and NAFLD using an objective biomarker of tobacco exposure (urinary cotinine) and self-reported questionnaire. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 160 862 asymptomatic examinees who underwent abdominal ultrasonography and urina

SJR Q1The American Journal of Gastroenterology

INTRODUCTION: The impact of glycemic status and insulin resistance on the risk of pancreatic cancer in the nondiabetic population remains uncertain. We aimed to examine the association of glycemic status and insulin resistance with pancreatic cancer mortality in individuals with and without diabetes. METHODS: This is a cohort study of 572,021 Korean adults without cancer at baseline, who participated in repeat screening examinations which included fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and insul

Abstract Background and Aim A biosimilar of infliximab, CT‐P13 (Remsima®) has the potential to reduce treatment costs and enhance access to biological therapy for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. However, long‐term clinical data on its use for IBD treatment are currently sparse. We aimed to investigate the long‐term efficacy and safety of CT‐P13 therapy in a large, real‐life IBD cohort. Methods A total of 368 IBD patients (227 with Crohn's disease [CD] and 141 with ulcerative colitis [

Abstract Background and Aim The aim of this study is to determine the impact of clinically evident portal hypertension (CEPH) on prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with Child–Pugh A cirrhosis who underwent transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). Methods A retrospective data analysis was performed for a total of 388 treatment‐naïve HCC patients with Child–Pugh A cirrhosis who underwent TACE as first‐line treatment from January 2000 to June 2014. FDG PET-CT showed lower sensitivity for detecting primary tumor and regional lymph node involvement than MDCT and MRI. However, the SUVmax of primary tumors and metastatic lesions derived from FDG PET-CT could have significant implications for predicting prognoses in extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma patients.

The early use of IFX did not reduce CD-related surgery requirements in Korean patients with CD. These study results suggest that the early use of IFX may have little impact on the clinical outcome of CD in Korean patients in the setting of a conventional step-up algorithm.

We investigated the risk factors for adenoma occurrence at surveillance colonoscopy, especially focusing on patient characteristics, including metabolic factors.Surveillance colonoscopy intervals depend on baseline adenoma characteristics. However, patients' characteristics may also influence the occurrence of adenomas.Of 62,171 asymptomatic subjects who underwent colonoscopy for a health check-up between 2010 and 2011, 4869 subjects who underwent follow-up colonoscopy between 2012 and 2013 were
