About the Lab
Professor Nam-Hyun Jung's research lab focuses on environmental toxicology, nanomaterials, and sustainable remediation technologies. The lab investigates the fate, bioavailability, and toxicity of organic pollutants and nanoparticles in environmental matrices, with an emphasis on sequestration mechanisms in soils and the role of particle morphology in cytotoxicity. Additionally, the lab explores bio-based solutions for environmental challenges, such as self-healing concrete using bacterial carriers and natural compounds for antiviral and anti-inflammatory applications. These interdisciplinary efforts aim to address environmental contamination and human health risks through innovative, nature-inspired solutions.

15Phenanthrene and atrazine were aged for 200 days in sterilized samples of 16 soils that differed greatly in physical and chemical properties. At regular intervals during the aging period, the extent of sequestration was determined by measurement of biodegradation of the compounds by bacteria and the amounts extracted by a mild extraction procedure. Both compounds became sequestered in each of the soils, but the rate and extent of sequestration varied markedly among the soils. Sequestration was l
Variable sizes of nanoparticles, ranging from nano to micro scale, are of toxicological interest. In the present study, the authors hypothesized that, in addition to the size, the shape of iron oxide (Fe2O3) nanoparticles is a major factor that contributes to particle cytotoxicity. Cytotoxicity to mouse macrophage cells (RAW 264.7) was investigated using 3 different particles: micro-sized Fe2 O3 (M-Fe2O3), nano-sized Fe2O3 (N-Fe2O3), and rod-shaped Fe2O3 (R-Fe2O3). Whereas M-Fe2O3 and N-Fe2O3 we
A study was conducted to determine the effect of concentration on sequestration and bioavailability of phenanthrene and pyrene in soil. The compounds at 1.0, 10, and 100 mg/kg of soil became increasingly resistant to a mild solvent extraction and progressively less bioavailable to earthworms ( Eisenia foetida ) as a result of aging for 120 days. Aging also resulted in both compounds at 1.0 and 10 mg/kg and phenanthrene but not pyrene at 100 mg/kg becoming more resistant to microbial degradation.
Abstract The insecticidal toxicities of five essential oils against Pochazia shantungensis adults and nymphs, newly recorded pests, were evaluated. The LC 50 values of Thymus vulgaris, Ruta graveolens, Citrus aurantium, Leptospermum petersonii and Achillea millefolium oils were recorded as 57.48, 84.44, 92.58, 113.26 and 125.78 mg/L, respectively, against P. shantungensis nymphs using the leaf dipping bioassay, and 75.80, 109.86, 113.26, 145.06 and 153.74 mg/L, respectively, against P. shantunge
Cracking of concrete over time, is a natural phenomenon. Longer service life of concrete structures is desirable. Self-healing concrete using bacteria, which could form CaCO 3 crystals for crack sealing, has promised benefits to reduce cost for concrete maintenance, because cracks could be autonomously repaired without human intervention. However, because of harsh concrete internal environment render the effectiveness depending on the bacteria viability within concrete. In this study, expanded c
Airway epithelial cells are often infected by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), one of the most common causes of asthma, bronchiolitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pneumonia. During the infection process, excessive mucins instigate airway inflammation. However, the mechanism underlying RSV-induced airway hyper-responsiveness and inflammation is poorly understood. Furthermore, no reliable vaccines or drugs for antiviral therapy are available. In this study, the effect of the natur
Concrete crack healing by microbial calcium carbonate producers has been intensively studied for the last 10 years. To overcome the harsh environments of concrete, various carriers have been tested for their ability to protect the healing bacteria. Using expanded clay (EC) as a carrier is attractive because it provides adequate bond strength to the cement composites as well as protection to the bacteria from harsh environments. In this study, self-healing performance by EC was examined using sty
Abstract Background Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains one of the most fatal malignancies. Several chemotherapies employing fluorouracil (5-FU) and gemcitabine were attempted, but the survival rate was extremely low. Resveratrol (RVT), known as a polyphenol compound and phytoalexin, was demonstrated to induce intrinsic apoptosis in cancer cells. However, its low delivery performance and efficiency at tumor sites remain an obstacle to exploit RVT as a drug. To address these problems,
