About the Lab

Professor Narae Yang's research lab specializes in neurosurgical interventions and cerebrovascular disease management, with a focus on improving outcomes following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). The lab investigates clinical vasospasm, lumbar drainage, fever management, and complications such as acute cholecystitis in critically ill neurosurgical patients. It also explores minimally invasive surgical approaches—particularly the far lateral suboccipital technique—for posterior circulation aneurysms and rare intracranial pathologies like tuberculomas and spinal subdural hematomas. Additionally, the lab contributes to environmental health policy by analyzing industrial pollution control standards, particularly for the pulp and paper industry, in the context of global climate regulations.

The Effectiveness of Lumbar Cerebrospinal Fluid Drainage to Reduce the Cerebral Vasospasm after Surgical Clipping for Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
Soojeong Park,

Objective : Removal of blood from subarachnoid space with a lumbar drainage (LD) may decrease development of cerebral vasospasm. We evaluatedthe effectiveness of a LD for a clinical vasospasm and outcomes after clipping of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Methods : Between July 2008 and July 2013, 234 patients were included in this study. The LD group consisted of 126 patients, 108 patients in the non LD group. We investigated outcomes as follow : 1) clinical vasospasm, 2) angioplasty,

Spontaneous Resolution of Nontraumatic Acute Spinal Subdural Hematoma

Spinal subdural hematoma (SSDH) is an extremely uncommon condition. Causative factors include trauma, anticoagulant drug administration, hemostatic disorders, and vascular disorders such as arteriovenous malformations and lumbar punctures. Of SSDH cases, those that do not have any traumatic event can be considered cases of nontraumatic acute spinal subdural hematoma, which is known to have diverse clinical progress. Treatment typically consists of surgical decompression and cases in which the co

Objective : Since posterior circulation vascular lesions are adjacent to important structures such as the brain stem and lower cranial nerves, the acquisition of anatomical information and the careful selection of approaches are essential for the surgical treatment of these lesions. We examined the characteristics and the indications of the far lateral suboccipital approach which exposes lesions without retraction of the brain stem for the treatment of either a vertebral artery (VA) or posterior

Acute Cholecystitis as a Cause of Fever in Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Background: Fever is a very common complication that has been related to poor outcomes after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). The incidence of acalculous cholecystitis is reportedly 0.5%–5% in critically ill patients, and cerebrovascular disease is a risk factor for acute cholecystitis (AC). However, abdominal evaluations are not typically performed for febrile patients who have recently undergone aSAH surgeries. In this study, we discuss our experiences with febrile aSAH patients who

We report the case of a 44-year-old woman who presented with a headache and right sixth cranial nerve palsy. The lesion mimicked a tentorial meningioma in the brain and was investigated using computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Gross total resection was achieved using a subtemporal approach. Histologic examination of the mass revealed the typical tuberculoma such as granulomas with caseous necrosis. Postoperative antituberculous medication led to complete resolution of neurologic

Multiple Stenting without Coils for Traumatic Pseudoaneurysm of Supraclinoid Internal Carotid Artery: Two Case Reports
Seo Dong-Min,

Traumatic intracranial pseudoaneurysm (TIPA) is a very rare disease that is difficult to diagnose and treat and has high mortality and morbidity. Various treatment methods, such as microsurgery and endovascular treatment, have been proposed because TIPA accompanies traumatic brain injury. It is necessary to consider the location and characteristics of the TIPA and the patient's condition. According to previous reports regarding the endovascular treatment of TIPA, most cases were treated with ste

Ventricular aneurysms are very rare. Most ventricular aneurysms are developed at the choroidal artery or a major branch of the circle of Willis. However, in the present study, we will introduce a special case of an intraventricular aneurysm that does not have the parent artery. Previously, a healthy 55 year-old man was admitted to our outpatient clinic with the complaints of headache of 3-month duration and gait disturbance of 2-month duration. On Brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance

Huge occipital spindle cell lipoma: a case report

Spindle cell lipoma is a subtype of lipoma first defined by Enzinger and Harvey; it accounts for <1.5% of all lipomatous tumors. We present an unusual case of a huge spindle cell lipoma. A 49-year-old man with diabetes mellitus experienced neck pain during sleep because of a huge occipital and upper posterior neck mass that had slowly grown during 4 years. We performed local excision of the tumor, and pathological findings confirmed the diagnosis of spindle cell lipoma measuring 10×9.5×5 cm. The
