About the Lab

Professor O-Ki Kwon's research lab specializes in endovascular neurosurgery and cerebrovascular interventions, with a focus on improving outcomes for complex cerebral aneurysms and cerebrovascular occlusive diseases. The lab investigates advanced endovascular techniques such as stent-assisted coiling, dual microcatheter embolization, and intra-arterial thrombolysis using agents like abciximab to enhance recanalization and reduce complications. A key research direction involves quantitative assessment of revascularization after bypass surgery in moyamoya disease, utilizing advanced angiographic software for precise evaluation. The lab also explores patient-centered protocols, such as minimizing fasting before cerebral angiography, to improve clinical safety and efficiency.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The endovascular occlusion of aneurysms with unfavorable configurations such as a broad neck and an important branch from the fundus remains a technical challenge. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiologic and clinical results of complicated aneurysm treatment by using two microcatheters. METHODS: Twenty-five aneurysms in 25 patients were treated by using two microcatheters, from August 2001 to February 2004. Fourteen patients presented with a subarachnoid

SJR Q1Neurosurgery

BACKGROUND: Up-to-date, quantitative angiographic measurement of revascularization extent after bypass surgery has not been reported. OBJECTIVE: To measure the extent of angiographic revascularization quantitatively 6 months postoperatively with the OSIRIS program (University Hospital of Geneva, version 3.1). METHODS: A total of 75 bypass procedures were performed in 65 consecutive adult moyamoya disease patients, and 71 bypass surgeries in 61 adult moyamoya disease patients were studied 6 month

Intraarterially administered abciximab as an adjuvant thrombolytic therapy: report of three cases.

The intravenous administration of abciximab can be used as an adjuvant therapy to facilitate thrombolysis for acute cerebrovascular occlusion. However, to our knowledge, the intraaterial administration of abciximab has not been reported. We recently treated three patients with acute thrombosis of the cerebral arteries by using an intraarterial infusion of urokinase and abciximab. Even with small doses, we achieved rapid and complete recanalization without complications. We believe that the intra

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated the outcomes of middle cerebral artery bifurcation (MCAB) aneurysms treated with simple coiling using single or multiple catheters without stents or balloons. METHODS: This study included 100 patients with 103 MCAB aneurysms who underwent a simple coiling procedure without the adjuvant use of stents or balloons. The angiographic clinical outcomes and recurrence of these aneurysms were evaluated. RESULTS: Of the 103 aneurysms, 102 (99.0 %) aneurysms were successfully tr

BACKGROUND: The availability of stents has widened the indications of endovascular intervention for cerebral aneurysms. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the effect of stents on radiologic outcomes and to analyze the risk factors for aneurysmal recanalization via propensity score matching. METHODS: From the 735 aneurysms treated with coil embolization with stents (n = 187) and without stents (n = 548) between 2009 and 2011, 157 propensity score-matched case pairs were selected. The recanalization rates an

Is Fasting Necessary for Elective Cerebral Angiography?
O-Ki Kwon, Chang Wan Oh, Hyunsun Park, Jae Sung Bang, Hee‐Joon Bae, Moon‐Ku Han, Seong Ho Park, Moon Hee Han, Hyun‐Seung Kang, S.-K. Park, Gilbert Whang, B. C. Kim
SJR Q1American Journal of NeuroradiologyOA

The incidence of nausea and vomiting associated with cerebral angiography is low and not affected by diet or fasting. Pulmonary aspiration had no difference between the diet and the fasting group. Our study suggests that fasting may not be necessary for patients who undergo elective cerebral angiography.
