About the Lab
Professor O-Yeong Lee's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal motility disorders, with a strong focus on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional gastrointestinal diseases in Asian populations. The lab investigates the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying IBS, including visceral hypersensitivity, altered gut transit, and the role of psychosocial factors, while also evaluating novel therapeutic interventions such as tegaserod and DA-9601 for symptom management. A key emphasis is placed on understanding ethnic and regional differences in GI physiology and disease presentation, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.

15BACKGROUND: Tegaserod has been shown to be an effective therapy for the multiple symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in Western populations. However, little information is available regarding the use of tegaserod in the Asia-Pacific population. AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of tegaserod versus placebo in patients with IBS from the Asia-Pacific region. PATIENTS: A total of 520 patients from the Asia-Pacific region with IBS, excluding those with diarrhoea predomin
Bloating and visible abdominal distension may arise from two distinct but interrelated physiological processes. Although the sensation of bloating may be related to enhanced sensitivity to visceral afferent stimulation, abdominal distension in more severely affected patients may be related to triggering of a visceromotor reflex affecting the tone of abdominal wall muscles.
Abstract Background & Aims Increases in mucosal immune cells have frequently been observed in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients. However, this finding is not completely consistent between studies, possibly due to a combination of methodological variability, population differences and small sample sizes. We performed a meta‐analysis of case – control studies that compared immune cell counts in colonic biopsies of IBS patients and controls. Methods PubMed and Embase were searched in Febr
BACKGROUND: The 5-HT(3) receptor antagonists are known to be effective for the treatment of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but not widely used yet. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of ramosetron, a 5-HT(3) receptor antagonist, and mebeverine in male patients with IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D). METHODS: This study was performed in a multicenter, randomized, open-label design. Data of 343 male patients with IBS-D who were randomized to either a 4-week
Objective: There has been no data on health related quality of life (HRQOL) in general Korean population. Assessing factors affecting HRQOL in Koreans is fundamental in HRQOL research. The objective of this study is to assess HRQOL in Korean using Korean version of EQ-5D (KEQ-5D). Methods: HRQOL was assessed using KEQ-5D from 1,044 randomly selected population representing general Korean population with telephone interview Result: The mean KEQ-5D utility score in Korean was 0.88 (range: -0.59~
BACKGROUND: Probiotics can be beneficial in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Mosapride citrate, a selective 5-HT4 receptor agonist, stimulates gastrointestinal motility. We investigated the efficacy of combination therapy with probiotics and mosapride for non-diarrheal-type IBS. METHODS: Two hundred and eighty-five IBS patients were randomly assigned to either a combination of probiotics (Bacillus subtilis and Streptococcus faecium) and mosapride at one of four different doses or a placebo for 4
Objective: Few studies have examined the impact of chronic diseases on populations using a comprehensive health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in Korea. We assessed HRQOL of patients with 16 common chronic diseases. Methods: We interviewed patients with chronic diseases (n=980) and healthy control (n=288) using two HRQOL measurements: Korean Medical Outcome Study Short Form-36 (KSF-36) and Korena EuroQol-5 Dimensions (KEQ-5D), and questions on sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. BACKGROUND: Recently, many studies reported that high carbohydrate and simple sugar intake increase a risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome significantly. AIM: To investigate the effect of carbohydrate on aminotransferase levels in Korea, where the proportion of carbohydrate in meals is extremely high but fat is low. METHODS: We used the data of Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES). A total of 19 749 people were included. Amounts and types of consumed foods were ex
BACKGROUND: Tricyclic antidepressants have good efficacy in irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), but their clinical use is limited by considerations of tolerability. Tianeptine, another antidepressant, acts as a selective serotonin reuptake enhancer. We compared tianeptine with amitriptyline for the treatment of patients with IBS-D. METHODS: We undertook a multicenter, randomized, open-label, non-inferiority clinical study that compared tianeptine with amitriptyline, each in combinati
Whether hydrogen and methane gas produced during lactulose breath test (LBT) are associated with symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is not determined. We aimed to investigate whether hydrogen and methane on LBT are associated with IBS symptoms. Sixty-eight IBS patients meeting the Rome III criteria for IBS, and 55 healthy controls, underwent LBT. The IBS subjects recorded their customary gastrointestinal symptoms on a questionnaire using visual analogue scales. LBT positivity was defined
In addition to inhibiting cyclooxygenase and prostaglandin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may cause gastroduodenal injuries due to reactive oxygen species produced by recruited inflammatory cells. DA-9601 is a novel antioxidant with anti-inflammatory and cyto-protective effects. This study was conducted to compare the efficacy and safety of DA-9601 with misoprostol for preventing NSAID-associated gastroduodenal injury. In this randomized, double-blind, multicenter, noninferiority
BACKGROUND: The aims of this study were to confirm the non-inferiority of tegoprazan to lansoprazole up to week 4 in patients with erosive esophagitis (EE) and to evaluate its effectiveness in rapid mucosal healing and symptom relief at week 2. METHODS: In this multi-center, randomized, double-blind, active-comparator non-inferiority trial, 218 patients with endoscopically confirmed EE (Los Angeles Classification Grades A-D) were randomly allocated to either the tegoprazan (50 mg) or lansoprazol
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of complications related to diverticulitis and visceral obesity. The study was based on a retrospective case note review conducted at the Hanyang University Hospital. Patients were diagnosed with diverticulitis based on clinical symptoms and abdominal computed tomography (CT) findings and divided into two groups: those admitted with complicated diverticulitis and those with a simple diverticulitis episode. We compared the body mass index (BMI
