About the Lab

Professor Park Kyung-sun's research lab focuses on integrative and complementary medicine approaches for gynecological and reproductive health disorders, particularly primary dysmenorrhea and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The lab investigates the efficacy and mechanisms of traditional herbal medicines, acupuncture, moxibustion, and stem cell therapies using both preclinical (in vitro and in vivo) and clinical study designs. A key emphasis is placed on understanding the physiological and neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying these treatments, including autonomic nervous system modulation and ion channel function in stem cells. The lab also explores the safety and long-term effectiveness of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) interventions in women's health.

The efficacy and safety of acupuncture in women with primary dysmenorrhea

The results of this study suggest that acupuncture might reduce menstrual pain and associated symptoms more effectively compared to no treatment or NSAIDs, and the efficacy could be maintained during a short-term follow-up period. Despite limitations due to the low quality and methodological restrictions of the included studies, acupuncture might be used as an effective and safe treatment for females with primary dysmenorrhea.
