About the Lab
Professor Sa Ram Lee's research lab specializes in the development of advanced hemodialysis and extracorporeal circulatory support systems, with a focus on enhancing convective solute clearance through innovative hemodynamic control. The lab explores pulsatile blood flow dynamics, internal filtration, and backfiltration mechanisms to improve dialysis efficiency while minimizing blood trauma. Key research directions include the design of novel dialyzers and pumps with reduced hemolysis, as well as the application of dual-modal sensing (SERS and fluorescence) for biomarker detection in renal failure. The lab also investigates the impact of pulsatile flow on oxygenator performance and extracorporeal life support systems.

8Internal filtration contributes to convective clearance in high-flux hemodialysis but its contribution is limited by low pressure gradients. Therefore, a modification using a conventional dialyzer was conceived to enhance internal filtration and backfiltration (BF) rates. The modified dialyzer includes two longitudinal independent regions for blood flow, which were created by redesigning dialyzer caps. Blood pressures remained higher than dialysate pressures in one region and lower in the other
Midsize molecule retention is related with renal-failure-associated mortality. Here, the authors describe a new dialysis modality, pulse push/pull hemodialysis (PPPHD), which increases convective clearance. Blood and dialysate are circulated by a pulsatile pump, but with pulsatile flow patterns that are 180 degrees out of phase. This causes blood-to-dialysate pressure gradients that oscillate between positive and negative, and which cause consecutive periods of ultrafiltration and backfiltration
Research on pulsatile blood pumps for extracorporeal life support has been widely performed because of the proven advantageous effects of blood pulsation. However, studies on the use of pulsatile blood pumps for hemodialysis are limited, although available evidence demonstrates that pulsatile blood flow has a positive influence on dialysis outcome. Therefore, the authors designed a new pulsatile pump, which is characterized by minimal-occlusion of blood-containing tubing, no requirement for valv
A new dialysis modality was devised to increase convective mass transfer. Blood and dialysate are circulated by a pulsatile pump, but with pulsatile flow patterns that are 180 degrees out of phase, which causes blood-to-dialysate pressure gradients to oscillate between positive and negative. In the present study, hemodialytic performance of the devised modality was investigated using a canine renal failure model. Membrane hydraulic permeabilities (K(uf)) and fiber bundle volumes (FBV) were measu
We demonstrate simultaneous detection of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and fluorescence signals from a silver microbead. For the dual signal generation, silver microbeads with a diameter of 15 microm were functionalized with benzenethiol (BT) as a Raman tag and a cardiac troponin I (cTnI) antibody on their surface. SERS and fluorescence signals were obtained using a single argon laser source with 488 nm wavelength. The SERS signals from Raman tag can be used as identification indices
An oxygenator is a very important artificial organ and widely used for patients with lung failure or during open heart surgery. Although an oxygenator has been widely studied worldwide to enhance its efficiency, studies on oxygenators, in particular when using a pulsatile blood flow, are domestically limited. Therefore, a new oxygenator was developed in the lab and animal experimental results are described in the paper. The oxygenator is composed of polycarbonate housing and polypropylene hollow
As the market size of medical devices grows and the spread of information technology, including artificial intelligence, interest in software medical devices is growing. Many researchers are seeking to commercialize their software R&D achievements through licensing, and regulatory agencies are responding to this demand by estab- lishing a separate group of reviews for software medical devices and managing review procedures based on the IEC 62304 standard. However, due to the differences between
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore new ways of creating value in the medical field and to derive recommendations for the role of medical institutions and the government. Methods: In this paper, based on expert discussion, we classified Internet of Things (IoT) technologies into four categories according to the type of information they collect (location, environmental parameters, energy consumption, and biometrics), and investigated examples of application. Results: Biometric Io
