About the Lab
Professor Sang Chul Lee's research lab specializes in clinical and translational studies in interventional pain management and anesthesiology, with a focus on improving procedural safety and accuracy through advanced imaging techniques. The lab investigates fluoroscopy- and ultrasound-guided interventions such as lumbar sympathetic ganglion blocks, evaluates epidural anesthesia techniques, and explores the physiological and pharmacological effects of anesthetics in experimental models. Additionally, the lab contributes to medical physics through the development of high-resolution x-ray micro-CT systems for biomedical imaging applications.

15BACKGROUND: Fluoroscopy (FL)-guided lumbar sympathetic ganglion block (LSGB) is widely performed to diagnose and manage various diseases associated with sympathetically maintained pain. Recently, numerous ultrasound (US)-assisted procedures in pain medicine have been attempted, showing an advantage of low radiation exposure. This randomized, prospective trial compared the procedural outcomes and complications between FL-guided and US-assisted LSGBs. METHODS: Fifty LSGBs were randomly divided int
For evaluating the effects of thoracic epidural anesthesia, with or without bilateral vagotomy, epinephrine-induced arrhythmias were studied in 31 rabbits anesthetized with 1 minimum alveolar concentration of enflurane. We divided the rabbits into 5 groups: Group I (epidural saline as control group; n=6), Group II (epidural lidocaine without vagotomy; n=6), Group III (intravenous lidocaine; n=7), Group IV (epidural saline with vagotomy; n=6), and Group V (epidural lidocaine with vagotomy; n=6).
In this paper, we describe the development and performance evaluation of a 3-dimentional (3-D) high-resolution x-ray microtomography (micro-CT) system. Unlike a conventional micro-CT, the developed system uses a flat-panel detector as a digital x-ray imager. The detector is a CsI:Tl (thallium-doped cesium iodide) scintillator coupled to an active-matrix photodiode array with a pixel pitch of 50 [μm]. Without geometric magnification, the spatial resolution of the detector is 7 [lp/mm] at 10 [%] o
Background : During one-lung anesthesia in thoracic surgery, accurate placement of double lumen endobronchial tube(DLT) is essential. We have only a few data regarding adequate depth of DLT, especially after position change. We measured the depth of DLT and the change of depth after position change in 50 adult patients. Methods : After endotracheal intubation with left-sided Robertshaw type polyvinyl chloride(PVC) endobronchial tube, fiberoptic bronchoscope was inserted through tracheal lumen an
The distance from the skin to the lumbar epidural space was measured in 87 women undergoing cesarean section(C/S) and 36 patients undergoing total abdominal hysterectomy(TAH) to compare with the C/S group. The patients age, height, most recent antenatal or preopertive weight, and shoe size were obtained before measuring the epidural depth. The PI(ponderal index) was caculated by dividing weight(kg) by height(m). In patients undergoing total hysterectomy, the mean distance was found to be 4.42 cm
Mice have been widely used in various areas of biomedical research such as drug development and genetic engineering. To investigate drug effect or treatment efficacy in the mouse studies, in-vivo mouse imaging modalities have been recently developed. Among various kinds of imaging modalities, micro-CT is expected to be useful in many biological applications since it provides 3-dimensional high-resolution tomographic images. In this study, we have developed a high-resolution micro-CT system using
