About the Lab

Professor Sang-Dae Kim's research lab specializes in structural engineering with a focus on advanced composite and buckling-restrained structural systems. The lab investigates the behavior and performance of steel-concrete composite columns, particularly under combined flexural and axial loading, as well as the fire resistance of innovative beam systems like the iTECH beam. Additional research explores the mechanical response of buckling-restrained braces and the biological mechanisms of cellular adaptation under hypoxic conditions, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach combining civil engineering and biomedical research. The lab emphasizes experimental and computational methods to enhance structural safety, ductility, and resilience under extreme loading conditions such as earthquakes and fires.

Structural Performance of Steel-Concrete Composite Column Subjected to Axial and Flexural Loading

SJR Q1Journal of Asian Architecture and Building EngineeringOA

The steel-concrete composite column is a new composite member that can achieve constructability and economy by filling the empty space in the steel H-flange with concrete. Even before this study was conducted, it had been proven in another study on the axial capacity of a steel-concrete composite column that the steel-concrete composite column with a non-compact section has excellent structural strength. Further studies on flexural-compressive capacity are necessary, though, due to the structura

SJR Q1Journal of Neurosurgery Spine

Spontaneous spinal subdural hematoma (SDH) is an uncommon cause of acute spinal cord compression. When it does occur, however, it may have disastrous results and a poor prognosis. The nontraumatic acute spinal SDH usually results from a defect in a hemostatic mechanism (such as coagulopathy or the use of anticoagulant therapy) or from iatrogenic causes (such as spinal puncture). Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a nonatherosclerotic systemic arteriopathy of unknown cause that typically affects th

Hypoxia induces Wee1 expression and attenuates hydrogen peroxide-induced endothelial damage in MS1 cells

SJR Q1Experimental & Molecular MedicineOA

In an oxygen-depleted environment, endothelial cells initiate an adaptive pattern of synthesis, which may enable them to survive hypoxic crises. Using high-resolution two-dimensional gel electrophoresis in conjunction with mass spectroscopy, we obtained a 24 differential display of proteins in the pancreatic endothelial cell line, MS-1, at four time points following induction of hypoxia. The induction of Wee1 under hypoxia was confirmed both at the mRNA and protein levels. The phosphorylation of

A modified dynamic inelastic analysis of tall buildings considering changes of dynamic characteristics
Sang-Dae Kim, Won‐Kee Hong, Young‐Kyu Ju
The Structural Design of Tall Buildings

Pushover analysis is commonly used to evaluate the inelastic ultimate capacity of structures. However, pushover analysis is carried out based on constant distributions throughout the incremental analysis, which cannot capture the variation in the acceleration profile due to inelastic behavior. For this reason, when plastic hinges form in structure, constant distributions of lateral forces cannot be used any longer. Conventional dynamic inelastic method by time-history analysis can be used for sp

Buckling-Restrained Brace is composed of brace core and constraining member for the purpose of restraing the buckling of brace and providing large inelastic deformation of the member. Constraining member such as steel tube wrap around the brace core prevents the buckling of brace core by means of its flexural resistance, and makes sure that the brace members dissipate a large quantity of energy and form stabilized hysteresis behavior. In this study, to examine the component capacity of the buckl

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the fire resistance of iTECH beam system, which is partly encased by the concrete, under various fires. The temperature distribution of iTECH beam under two fire conditions were analyzed by using the finite element program in this study. ISO standard fire and Eurocode parametric fire were adopted for the target fire conditions. The load-carrying capacity of iTECH beam under fire was evaluated according to Eurocode 1 part 2.2. to analyze the contributions

Steel-concrete composite column is a new composite column system, where links are welded between two flanges of H-shapes steel, and concrete is filled in space between two flanges. In this study, SC composite column composed of the noncompact section was tested in order to estimate its axial compressive capacity. The parameters of test were composite effect, the space of link, width-thickness ratio, and the shape of link. The results showed that SC composite column composed of the noncompact sec
