About the Lab

Professor Sang-Hee Park's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying viral oncogenesis, particularly involving Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and its role in lymphoproliferative disorders and lymphomas, especially in the context of immune senescence and aging. The lab also investigates non-coding RNAs, such as the miR-34 family, in tumor suppression and lung tumorigenesis, and explores liquid biopsy approaches using urinary cell-free and exosomal DNA for urothelial bladder carcinoma. A key emphasis is on identifying genetic and epigenetic alterations that drive cancer progression and immune evasion.

MiR-34a and miR-34b/c have distinct effects on the suppression of lung adenocarcinomas

SJR Q1Experimental & Molecular MedicineOA

Three miR-34 family members (miR-34a, miR-34b, and miR-34c) are clustered on two different chromosomal loci, Mir34a and Mir34b/c. These miRNAs have identical seed sequences, which are predicted to target the same set of genes. However, miR-34a and miR-34c have different sets of negatively correlated genes in lung adenocarcinoma data from The Cancer Genome Atlas. Therefore, we hypothesized that the individual miR-34 family members, which are tumor suppressive miRNAs, would have varying effects on

Epstein–Barr virus‐associated T/natural killer‐cell lymphoproliferative disorders
Sanghui Park, Young Hyeh Ko
SJR Q1The Journal of Dermatology

Primary infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is usually asymptomatic and, in a normal host, EBV remains latent in B cells after primary infection for the remainder of life. Uncommonly, EBV can infect T or natural killer (NK) cells in a person with a defect in innate immunity, and EBV infection can cause unique systemic lymphoproliferative diseases (LPD) of childhood. Primary infection in young children can be complicated by hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis or fulminant systemic T-cell LPD o

Urinary Exosomal and cell-free DNA Detects Somatic Mutation and Copy Number Alteration in Urothelial Carcinoma of Bladder

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Urothelial bladder carcinoma (UBC) is characterized by a large number of genetic alterations. DNA from urine is a promising source for liquid biopsy in urological malignancies. We aimed to assess the availability of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) and exosomal DNA (exoDNA) in urine as a source for liquid biopsy in UBC. We included 9 patients who underwent surgery for UBC and performed genomic profiling of tumor samples and matched urinary cfDNA and exoDNA. For mutation analysis, deep sequencing was perfor

Viral oncogenes and host immunosenescence have been suggested as causes of Epstein-Barr virus-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (EBV + DLBCL) of the elderly. To investigate the molecular genetic basis of immune evasion and tumor outgrowth, we analyzed copy number alterations (CNAs) and gene expression profiles in EBV + DLBCL samples compared with EBV - DLBCL. There were relatively few genomic alterations in EBV + DLBCL compared with those detected in EBV-negative DLBCL. The most frequent CN

Non‐urothelial carcinomas of the bladder
Sanghui Park, Victor E. Reuter, Donna E. Hansel
SJR Q1Histopathology

Non-urothelial carcinomas involving the bladder are uncommon and often diagnostically challenging. These carcinomas may show squamous, adenocarcinomatous or neuroendocrine features, with immunohistochemical stains aiding the diagnosis in only a subset of cases. The clinical history in non-urothelial bladder carcinomas is important, given that the differential diagnosis often includes secondary involvement of the bladder by direct extension or metastasis from carcinomas at other sites. Collagenous Gastritis in A Korean Child : A Case Report
Sanghui Park, Dong Hoon Kim, Youn Ho Choe, Yeon‐Lim Suh
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Collagenous gastritis, a counterpart of collagenous colitis, is an extremely rare disorder. The first case of collagenous gastritis in a Korean boy in his pre-teens who had been receiving treatment for refractory iron deficiency anemia has been reported. The patient had been suffering from intermittent abdominal pain, recurrent blood-tinged vomiting and poor oral intake. The gastric endoscopy revealed diffuse cobblestone appearance of the mucosa with easy touch bleeding throughout the stomach bu

The data suggest that AR and growth factors are important factors for maturation of SNs, but not influenced by the administration of 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (5ARI). Although the cells comprising the SNs seem to be not associated with the origin of prostatic GISTs, there is a possibility of a tentative link of SFTs arising from SNs of the prostate.

Pitfalls of Frozen Section Diagnosis for Paraganglioma: A Clinicopathologic Analysis and Review of the Literature

SJR Q2International Journal of Surgical Pathology

Few paraganglioma (PG) cases include frozen section diagnoses, and therefore, the accuracy of frozen section diagnosis for PG remains unknown. To better understand the histologic characteristics and pitfalls of frozen section findings for PG, 15 PG cases with frozen section diagnoses were selected from 12 articles through PubMed (1984-2015). In addition, we included 3 cases of PG for which intraoperative consultations were requested during a 5-year period (2012-2016) in 2 hospitals. Seven PGs we
