About the Lab

Professor Sang Min Park's research lab focuses on the epidemiological and population-based investigation of modifiable lifestyle and environmental factors influencing chronic disease outcomes. The lab explores the interplay between metabolic health, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and cognitive decline, with a particular emphasis on early-life and midlife risk factors. Key research directions include the impact of smoking, obesity, hypertension, periodontal disease, and urban environmental exposures—such as green space—on long-term health trajectories. The lab aims to inform public health policies through evidence-based interventions targeting preventable risk factors.

Impact of Prediagnosis Smoking, Alcohol, Obesity, and Insulin Resistance on Survival in Male Cancer Patients: National Health Insurance Corporation Study
Sang Min Park, Min Kyung Lim, Soon Ae Shin, Young Ho Yun
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical OncologyOA

PURPOSE: Although many studies have demonstrated that smoking, alcohol, obesity, and insulin resistance are risk factors for cancer, the role of those factors on cancer survival has been less studied. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study participants were 14,578 men with a first cancer derived from a cohort of 901,979 male government employees and teachers who participated in a national health examination program in 1996. We obtained mortality data for those years from the Korean Statistical Office.

Association of Blood Pressure Classification in Korean Young Adults According to the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Guidelines With Subsequent Cardiovascular Disease Events

SJR Q1JAMAOA

Among Korean young adults, stage 1 and stage 2 hypertension, compared with normal blood pressure, were associated with increased risk of subsequent cardiovascular disease events. Young adults with hypertension, defined by the 2017 ACC/AHA criteria, may be at increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Residing in urban regions with greater green space coverage may lead to a reduced risk of CVD. Urban planning intervention policies that increase urban green space coverage could help to reduce the risk of CVD.

SJR Q1Journal of the American Heart AssociationOA

BACKGROUND: Anemia is thought to increase mortality risks, but the effects of high hemoglobin concentration on survival are unclear. The effect of change in hemoglobin concentrations on survival in the general population is also unknown. This study aimed to examine the effect of hemoglobin concentrations and their changes on cardiovascular and all-cause mortality risks. METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively analyzed a cohort from the NHIS-HEALS (National Health Insurance Service-National Healt

Association of muscle mass and fat mass with insulin resistance and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Korean adults: a cross-sectional study
Kyuwoong Kim, Sang Min Park
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Relationship of muscle mass and fat mass with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome remains uncertain, especially among Asian population. We performed a cross-sectional study with 14,807 adult participants aged between 18 and 65 in the fourth and fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) data to investigate whether muscle mass and fat mass are associated with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. DEXA records were used to c

SJR Q1Annals of Clinical and Translational NeurologyOA

OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk of developing dementia in relation to duration of smoking cessation by using a nationwide health claims database. METHODS: This cohort study included 46,140 men aged 60 years or older from Korean National Health Insurance System - National Health Screening Cohort, a population-based national health screening program from 2002 to 2013. The changes in smoking habit from a questionnaire during the first (2002 and 2003) and second (2004 and 2005) health examination p

SJR Q1Journal of the American Geriatrics SocietyOA

OBJECTIVES: Although chronic periodontitis has been associated with Alzheimer's disease, the effect of chronic periodontitis on vascular dementia as well as the role of lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical activity in this association are still unclear. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Population based. PARTICIPANTS: The study population was derived from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort. Among 262 349 participants,

AIMS: Little is known about the trade-off between the health benefits of physical activity (PA) and the potential harmful effects of increased exposure to air pollution during outdoor PA. We examined the association of the combined effects of air pollution and changes in PA with cardiovascular disease (CVD) in young adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: This nationwide cohort study included 1 469 972 young adults aged 20-39 years. Air pollution exposure was estimated by the annual average cumulative leve

Use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and risk of fracture: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Chun-Sick Eom, Hyun-Ki Lee, Sungmin Ye, Sang Min Park, Kyung-Hwan Cho
SJR Q1Journal of Bone and Mineral Research

Previous studies have reported inconsistent findings regarding the association between the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and the risk of fracture. We identified relevant studies by searching three electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library) from their inception to October 20, 2010. Two evaluators independently extracted data. Because of heterogeneity, we used random-effects meta-analysis to obtain pooled estimates of effect. We identified 12 studies:

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical Oncology

PURPOSE: Smoking, obesity, and insulin resistance are well-known risk factors for cancer, yet few epidemiology studies evaluate their role as risk factors for a second primary cancer (SPC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We identified 14,181 men with a first cancer from the National Health Insurance Corporation Study cohort. We obtained data on fasting glucose level, body mass index (BMI), and smoking history from an enrollment interview (1996). We obtained SPC incidence data for 1996 through 2002 from t
