About the Lab
Professor Sangkun Kim's research lab focuses on innovation, strategic management, and institutional dynamics in organizational and economic contexts. The lab explores how firms leverage internal and external resources—particularly slack resources and technological search strategies—to drive innovation, with an emphasis on the interplay between diversification, resource types, and R&D strategies. It also investigates individual-level creativity, social networks, and decision-making biases in entrepreneurship, as well as policy design in social protection systems such as basic income. The lab integrates theoretical frameworks like the resource-based view, institutional theory, and cognitive psychology to address real-world challenges in innovation, competitiveness, and social policy.

15This paper provides a new approach to account for the relationship between diversification and innovation by integrating insights concerning strategic fit. We argue that the type of diversification strategy leads to greater innovation output when the appropriate technological search strategy is employed. Using a longitudinal study of the patenting activity of 258 manufacturing firms, we find that strategic fit is important for innovation output. More specifically, a related diversification strat
Abstract This article addresses the theoretical limitations of social network theory as it applies to individual creativity. Social network theory implicitly assumes that social interactions influence creativity identically for all individuals in all circumstances. We argue that the extent to which individuals take advantage of their social ties may vary depending on individual characteristics, based on the componential model and the investment theory of creativity. Building on an interactional
This study aims to analyze the competitiveness of container ports using a cross-country analysis with theoretical foundations. Tangible and intangible resources are discussed as determinants of container port competitiveness using the resource-based view and the institutional theory. This study analyzes the relationships among six variables: container port competitiveness, traffic volume, quality of infrastructure, linear shipping connectivity, operating efficiency, and institutional influence.
Abstract There is growing interest in adopting basic income as a new social protection policy in many countries. South Korea is no exception. There have been heated discussions on the benefits and costs of adopting basic income as a universal income support program among policy makers and academics in South Korea. However, one of the problems in the discourse of basic income discussion in South Korea has been a lack of clear definition of basic income. In this study, we develop a basic income fi
Firms use their internal resources effectively and efficiently in order to achieve innovation, but not all types of resources trigger the same level of innovation. We provide a new insight to understand the relationship between slack resources and R&D strategy by suggesting a new typology for slack resources: tangible and intangible slack. Building on resource-based view, we propose that tangible slack leads to more external R&D activities (external knowledge acquisition) and results in radical
Abstract Research in entrepreneurship decision making assumes that entrepreneurs use a relatively distinct decision-making process when it comes to market entry. Building on a biased comparative-judgment-formation framework and egocentrism theory, this article theorizes a model of entrepreneurs’ egocentric market entry decisions. Specifically, we illustrate how entrepreneurs may be vulnerable to cognitive biases in the three stages of decision making: information acquisition, evaluation, and com
As the feature sizes of integrated circuits shrink, thinner photoresist coating should be used in order to avoid high aspect ratio which can cause pattern collapse. Especially for 193 nm lithography, photoresist coating is too thin to subsequent etching step. One of the solutions to this problem is using hardmasks which have good etch selectivity to adjacent layers. In this paper, silicon-based anti-reflective spin-on hardmasks (Si-SOH) are described. One of the major problems of silicon based p
It is conventional wisdom that universalism is more effective than selectivism in addressing the problems of poverty and inequality. In providing income security for the elderly, retirement pensions calculated on the principle of social insurance represent universalism and social assistance benefits on the basis of means‐test selectivism. Korea has both a contributory pension scheme and social assistance program for the elderly. The social assistance began in 1961. The contributory scheme, the N
In current semiconductor manufacturing processes, hardmasks have become more prevalent in patterning of small features. A silicon-containing hardmask, which can be spun onto wafers, is desirable in terms of mass production throughput and cost of ownership. Previously, we reported a paper on silicon-based anti-reflective spin-on hardmask materials for 193 nm lithography. In this paper, hardmask materials for 45 nm pattern of immersion ArF lithography are described. To achieve 45 nm patterning, a
This paper attempts to develop a conceptual model of the process of production\nand consumption of popular media texts (PMTs) to investigate the relationships\nbetween the production elements of PMTs and the ways in which particular\nproduction values may appeal to potential tourists in diverse settings. The\nproposed model presumes that there may be structurally causal relationships\nbetween highlighted major elements of PMTs production and patterns of\nconsumption associated with audience invo
