About the Lab
Professor Sangwan Jeong's research lab specializes in clinical immunology and autoimmunity, with a focus on connective tissue diseases, interstitial lung diseases, and the role of autoantibodies in systemic rheumatic disorders. The lab investigates the pathogenesis, biomarkers, and clinical management of conditions such as systemic sclerosis, idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, and neuropsychiatric manifestations in systemic lupus erythematosus. A key emphasis is placed on improving diagnostic accuracy through serologic markers like MSA/MAA and understanding the impact of comorbidities—such as sleep quality and microbiome—on disease progression and patient outcomes.

15The human oral microbiome refers to an ecological community of symbiotic and pathogenic microorganisms found in the oral cavity. The oral cavity is an environment that provides various biological niches, such as the teeth, tongue, and oral mucosa. The oral cavity is the gateway between the external environment and the human body, maintaining oral homeostasis, protecting the mouth, and preventing disease. On the flip side, the oral microbiome also plays an important role in the triggering, develo
Our results showed that poor sleep quality could significantly affect the patient-oriented outcomes and physician-reported activity index of pSS patients through the various effects of sleep quality on the psychological or somatic symptoms and the immune system.
Headaches are common in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It is important to identify the exact cause of headaches in SLE to avoid unnecessary steroid or immunosuppressive therapy like in neuropsychiatric SLE. A 35-year-old woman with SLE suddenly developed severe headache. Magnetic resonance angiography showed multifocal segmental narrowing of cerebral arteries, suggestive of central nervous system vasculitis. However, lack of abnormal enhancement in vessel wall imaging indicate
Sparganosis in humans is an incidental infection and is known to be associated with eating insufficiently cooked meat of frogs and snakes or drinking unboiled stream water. Although it can involve various internal organs, pulmonary and pleural involvement due to sparganum is rare. Because we recently experienced two cases involving lung parenchyma and pleura that were misdiagnosed as bacterial pneumonia and lung cancer, we herein intend to present them in detail.
The clinicoserologic criteria based on MSA/MAA positivity could reflect more precise clinical features of IIM. Establishment of a laboratory system routinely available to screen for MSA/MAA status will be beneficial to provide precise diagnosis and proper management of IIM patients.
Progressive fibrosing interstitial lung disease (PF-ILD) is a significant complication of connective tissue diseases (CTDs), particularly in systemic sclerosis (SSc), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM). Despite clinical similarities with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), CTD-associated ILDs exhibit distinct pathogenetic and immunologic features. Objective: This review aims to summarize key predictive biomarkers and current treatment strategies associated w
Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is an autoimmune disease which is a type of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis that frequently affects the lungs and kidneys. However, GPA limited to a single organ has also been reported. A 71-year-old man was admitted for back pain and fever. We detected elevated levels of inflammatory markers and myeloperoxidase-ANCA. Magnetic resonance imaging indicated diffuse inflammation of the back and psoas muscles. Histology showed de
BACKGROUND: To elucidate the achievement rates of imaging remission and to examine the characteristics associated with imaging remission status among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who have attained clinical remission. METHODS: Ninety-seven patients with RA patients who had attained clinical remission, defined by DAS28-ESR < 2.6 were enrolled. Power Doppler ultrasonography (PDUS) was performed on 16 joints and 2 tendons, including the first to third metacarpophalangeal, second and third
Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia (SED) tarda is an inherited skeletal arthropathy. Because SED tarda involves the joints and resemble the clinical findings of chronic arthropathies, this disease is frequently misdiagnosed as juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). We report here on three patients (father and his two daughters) in one family with SED tarda. All patients had back pain and polyarthralgia. Their radiographs revealed typical changes for SED tarda including platyspondyly and dysplastic bone
Systemic vasculitis is a group of diverse diseases characterized by immune-mediated inflammation of blood vessels. Current treatments for vasculitis, such as glucocorticoids and alkylating agents, are associated with significant side effects. In addition, the management of both small and large vessel vasculitis is challenging due to a lack of robust markers of disease activity. Recent research has advanced our understanding of the pathogenesis of both small and large vessel vasculitis, and this

Microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) is an anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV). The splenic involvement in AAV is known to be rare, and that in MPA has not been reported to date. A 74-year-old woman was admitted owing to left arm numbness and weakness. The patient was diagnosed as MPA with vasculitic neuropathy. Her abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed splenic infarction incidentally. The splenic infarction had been resolved at follow-up CT after treatment. I
Background/Objectives: Autoimmune thrombocytopenia is a common manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Its main treatments are glucocorticoids, intravenous immunoglobulin, and immunosuppressants, but thrombopoietin mimetics may be considered with refractory to conventional treatment. Romiplostim, a thrombopoietin receptor agonist, has been approved for increasing platelet counts in corticosteroid-refractory chronic immune thrombocytopenia. However, data on its long-term safety and e
