About the Lab
Professor Sangwook Kim's research lab specializes in system-level optimization for mobile and embedded systems, with a strong focus on improving energy efficiency, responsiveness, and I/O performance. The lab investigates dynamic power management, I/O scheduling, and non-volatile memory utilization to enhance user experience in resource-constrained environments such as smartphones and IoT devices. Key research directions include low-latency data processing, intelligent caching policies, and efficient synchronization in embedded database systems. The work bridges software and hardware systems, emphasizing real-world performance and energy trade-offs.

15Although the positive relationship between occupational commitment and organizational commitment has been well documented for occupation-specific and organization-specific studies, there is much less research that documents between-occupation differences in this relationship. Drawing from the occupational subculture literature, the authors offer and test hypotheses about between-occupation differences in levels of occupational and organizational commitment and in the correlation between these tw
In data-intensive applications, such as databases and key-value stores, reducing the request handling latency is important for providing better data services. In such applications, I/O-intensive background tasks, such as checkpointing, are the major culprit in worsening the latency due to the contention in shared I/O stack and storage. To minimize the contention, properly prioritizing I/Os is crucial but the effectiveness of existing approaches is limited for two reasons. First, statically decid
Dynamic processor power management based on periodic monitoring of processor load is being widely used to enhance battery life of mobile consumer electronics. The existing power management schemes, however, often lead to poor user-perceived responsiveness, which is a crucial factor for the quality of user experiences, by making inadequate or delayed decisions on the processor performance level. This paper presents a novel event-driven scheme of the processor power management to guarantee high re
Non-volatile write cache (NVWC) can help to improve the performance of I/O-intensive tasks, especially write-dominated tasks. The benefit of NVWC, however, cannot be fully exploited if an admission policy blindly caches all writes without differentiating the criticality of each write in terms of application performance. We propose a request-oriented admission policy, which caches only writes awaited in the context of request execution. To accurately detect such writes, a critical process, which
Dynamic power management schemes in mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs enhance battery life at the cost of prolonged user-perceived response time while the response time is a crucial factor for user experience. This paper presents systematic analysis of existing power management schemes adopted in recent smartphones in terms of user-perceived response time and energy consumption. For this analysis, we developed a latency measurement benchmark tool to quantify responsiveness to use
The embedded DBMS is a lightweight DBMS for effective management of quite small databases contained in tiny mobile devices. Synchronization is a core function of the embedded DBMS to preserve the consistency of data replicated in the server and client databases. This paper presents a framework for synchronization in embedded DBMS environment. We first address key issues for realizing synchronization, and then propose solutions to them obtained from our development. The main issues touched here a

Despite the ever-increasing use and reliance on survey research data in the social science nowadays, an undue attention has been paid in Korea as to how item non-responses (or, DK responses, shortly), as one of the most important criteria for quality data, vary by certain characteristics of the respondents and survey setting and what precisely accounts for the variation. In an attempt to fill this gap, this study tries to identify the correlates of DK responses. An extensive review of methods li
