About the Lab

Professor Se-Hoon Jung's research lab specializes in media literacy, digital persuasion, and the cognitive and behavioral impacts of media multitasking. The lab investigates how visual rhetoric, such as metaphors in advertising, influences persuasion and attitude formation, while also exploring the effects of emerging media phenomena—like deepfakes—on audience perception and decision-making. A central focus is on developing and evaluating media literacy interventions to enhance critical thinking and resilience against disinformation in digital environments.

Media Literacy Interventions: A Meta-Analytic Review
Se‐Hoon Jeong, Hyunyi Cho, Yoori Hwang
SJR Q1Journal of Communication

Although numerous media literacy interventions have been developed and delivered over the past 3 decades, a comprehensive meta-analytic assessment of their effects has not been available. This study investigates the average effect size and moderators of 51 media literacy interventions. Media literacy interventions had positive effects (d=.37) on outcomes including media knowledge, criticism, perceived realism, influence, behavioral beliefs, attitudes, self-efficacy, and behavior. Predictors of Multitasking with Media: Media Factors and Audience Factors
Se‐Hoon Jeong, Martin Fishbein
SJR Q1Media Psychology

In this research, multitasking with media is defined as an audience behavior that combines media use with another non-media activity. This study examines (a) the prevalence and patterns of multitasking among 14- to 16-year-olds and (b) the media and audience factors that predict such behavior. Consistent with previous research, this study found that youth frequently multitask with media. Both (a) ownership of media in bedrooms as a media factor and (b) sensation seeking as an audience factor wer

Media Multitasking Effects on Cognitive vs. Attitudinal Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis
Se‐Hoon Jeong, Yoori Hwang
SJR Q1Human Communication Research

Despite the recent proliferation of research on media multitasking, a comprehensive meta-analytic review of its effects has not been available. Based on a review of 49 media multitasking studies, this meta-analysis showed that multitasking has negative effects on cognitive outcomes, whereas it has positive effects on attitudinal (or persuasion-related) outcomes. Moderator analyses suggested that the negative effects of multitasking on cognitive outcomes varied by (a) user control, (b) task relev

Effects of Disinformation Using Deepfake: The Protective Effect of Media Literacy Education
Yoori Hwang, Ji Youn Ryu, Se-Hoon Jeong
SJR Q1Cyberpsychology Behavior and Social Networking

This research examines (a) the negative impact of disinformation including a deepfake video and (b) the protective effect of media literacy education. We conducted an experiment using a two disinformation message type (deepfake video present vs. absent) by three media literacy education (general disinformation vs. deepfake-specific vs. no literacy) factorial design. In the general disinformation (vs. deepfake-specific) literacy condition, participants were informed about (a) the definition of di

Parental Mediation Regarding Children's Smartphone Use: Role of Protection Motivation and Parenting Style
Yoori Hwang, In-Ho Choi, Jung-Yoon Yum, Se-Hoon Jeong
SJR Q1Cyberpsychology Behavior and Social Networking

Parental mediation is a type of behavior that could protect children against the negative uses and effects of smartphones. Based on protection motivation theory, this research (a) predicted parental mediation based on parents' threat and efficacy perceptions and (b) predicted threat and efficacy perceptions based on parenting styles and parents' addiction to smartphone use. An online survey of 448 parents of fourth to sixth graders was conducted. Results showed that both restrictive and active p

Based on a survey of 460 parents of elementary school students, we found that parental mediation was predicted by (a) parent's own addiction to smartphones, (b) perceived severity of smartphone addiction, and (c) persona

Misinformation Exposure and Acceptance: The Role of Information Seeking and Processing
Yoori Hwang, Se‐Hoon Jeong
SJR Q1Health Communication

The present study tests and extends the RISP model (a) by applying the model in the context of COVID-19 in South Korea and (b) by examining the impacts of information seeking and processing on misinformation exposure and acceptance. Based on a survey of 346 Korean adults, this study showed that information avoidance, but not information seeking, was a positive predictor of misinformation exposure. In addition, heuristic processing, but not systematic processing, moderated the relationship betwee

Effects of News About Genetics and Obesity on Controllability Attribution and Helping Behavior
Se‐Hoon Jeong
SJR Q1Health Communication

This study tested the effects of news stories that offer gene-based explanations of obesity compared to behavior-based and complex (combining genetic and behavioral) explanations on Korean undergraduate students. Controllability attribution and willingness to help obese people were expected as outcomes of the 3 different news types based on attribution theory. The study results indicate significant interactions between news types and audiences' predispositions (i.e., health control beliefs) on t

Se‐Hoon Jeong, Yoori Hwang, Martin Fishbein
SJR Q1Media Psychology

Young audiences frequently combine media use (e.g., television viewing) with other activities (e.g., homework); this is referred to as multitasking. This research uses longitudinal data to examine the moderating role of multitasking by examining the effects of exposure to sexual content in the media on adolescents' sexual behavior. Consistent with the predictions based on the limited capacity approach, there was a significant multitasking by exposure interaction suggesting that multitasking redu
