About the Lab
Professor Seojiwon Seo's research lab specializes in developing advanced materials and secure computing technologies to address critical challenges in environmental sustainability and cybersecurity. The lab focuses on designing eco-friendly nanomaterials—such as graphited nanodiamonds—for efficient water purification through persulfate activation, while also pioneering hardware-assisted security solutions like Memory Tagging Extension and TrustZone-based systems to prevent memory safety vulnerabilities in legacy software. Their work bridges materials science and computer security, emphasizing practical, scalable, and low-overhead solutions for real-world applications.

15This study introduces graphited nanodiamond (G-ND) as an environmentally friendly, easy-to-regenerate, and cost-effective alternative catalyst to activate persulfate (i.e., peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS)) and oxidize organic compounds in water. The G-ND was found to be superior for persulfate activation to other benchmark carbon materials such as graphite, graphene, fullerene, and carbon nanotubes. The G-ND/persulfate showed selective reactivity toward phenolic compounds and s
TrustZone is a hardware security technique in ARM mobile devices. Using TrustZone, software components running within the secure world can be completely isolated from the normal world, which ensures hardware-enforced security access control over the underlying computing resources. In order to support multiple trusted applications, TrustZone runs its own operating system, called the secure OS, within the secure world. Unfortunately, attackers have been exploiting privilege escalation vulnerabilit
Pointer invalidation has been a popular approach adopted in many recent studies to mitigate use-after-free errors. The approach can be divided largely into two different schemes: explicit invalidation and implicit invalidation. The former aims to eradicate the root cause of use-after-free errors by explicitly invalidating every dangling pointer. In contrast, the latter aims to prevent dangling pointers by freeing an object only if there is no pointer referring to it. A downside of the explicit s
Rosa gallica is a widely used Rosa species for medicinal and culinary purposes. Rosa gallica has been reported to display antioxidant, anti−inflammatory, and antibacterial activities. However, the effect of Rosa gallica against skin aging in vivo is unknown and its active components have not been fully understood. Oral administration of Rosa gallica prevented UVB−mediated skin wrinkle formation and loss of collagen/keratin fibers in the dorsal skin of mice. Examination of biomarkers at the molec
Panax ginseng CA Meyer has a variety of biologicaleffects, including antioxidant and antidiabeticactivities. Ginseng requires long-term cultivation, but thiscan be shortened using hydroponic systems to facilitate thecommercial development of ginseng as a functional food. However, the characteristics of short-term-cultured(\30 days) hydroponic ginseng (sHCG) are unclear. Weinvestigated the characteristics of 21-day-cultured sHCGcompared 5-year-old normally cultured ginseng. The freeradical-scaven
Against spatial memory violations threatening a vast amount of legacy software, various safety solutions have been suggested for decades. However, their practical uses have been impeded by diverse reasons, such as significant overheads and mandatory modifications of existing architectures. Accordingly, there has been a clear need for a practical safety solution that is fast enough and yet runs on commodity systems for its wide applicability in the field. As an effort to meet this need, a major p
As ARM is becoming more popular in today’s processor market, the OS kernel on ARM is gradually bloated to meet the market demand for more sophisticated services by absorbing diverse kernel extensions. Since this kernel bloating inevitably increases the attack surface, there has been a continuous effort to decrease the surface by dissociating or isolating untrusted extensions from the kernel. One approach in this effort is using software fault isolation (SFI) that instruments memory and control-t
BACKGROUND Accurate volumetric evaluation of donors' livers before surgery is crucial for successful living-donor liver transplantation. However, there are few studies on the volumetric evaluation in the recently popularized pure laparoscopic donor hepatectomy method, in contrast to the number of studies for conventional donor hepatectomy. We aimed to analyze the difference between estimated graft weight and actual graft weight in pure laparoscopic donor right hepatectomy (PLDRH) and conventiona

The present study investigated the anti‑melanogenesis effects of Giant Centella asiatica (GCA), a new cultivator of Centella asiatica (CA) cataloged by the Korea Forest Service in 2022, and compared its efficacy with that of traditional CA. GCA has a high yield per unit area and enhanced antioxidant properties. The anti‑melanogenic effects of GCA were investigated using B16F10 melanoma cells and a 3D human skin‑equivalent model. Key molecular mechanisms were elucidated through west
Much compelling evidence urges that the isolation provided by the hypervisor in a virtualized system is not complete at all, and in practice can be neutralized by elaborated adversaries, which consequently emphasizes the need of techniques to detect attacks on the guest VM kernels. In this regard, learning-based HIDSs have received much attention, which inspect the internals of each VM through monitoring models built by machine learning techniques. The inspection capability of learning-based HID
