Call Center Staffing: Service-Level Constraints and Index Priorities
Seung Bum Soh, Itai Gurvich
SJR Q1Operations Research

Call centers attribute different values to different customer segments. These values are reflected in quality-of-service targets. The prevalent target service factor (TSF) formulation requires, for example, that 80% of VIP customers wait less than 20 seconds while setting the target to 30 seconds for non-VIP customers. The call center must determine the staffing level together with a prioritization rule that meets these targets at minimal cost. In practice, because of the underlying complexity o

Improving portfolio investment performance with distance‐based portfolio‐combining algorithms
Hongseon Kim, Soonbong Lee, Seung Bum Soh, Seongmoon Kim
SJR Q2The Journal of Financial Research

Abstract We propose distance‐based portfolio‐combining algorithms to improve out‐of‐sample performance in the presence of estimation errors. Our algorithms use approaches similar to the shrinkage method but with a different weighting scheme: the Euclidean distance. The Euclidean distance of a portfolio is its 2‐norm distance to the in‐sample tangency portfolio. These algorithms aim to construct a portfolio with a small Euclidean distance by making a convex combination of any number of portfolios

Measuring and Comparing the Performance of Local Museums using DEA Technique
Seungbeom Kim, Seung Bum Soh

Portfolio Evaluation with the Vector Distance Based on Portfolio Composition
Heonbae Jeon, Soonbong Lee, Hongseon Kim, Seung Bum Soh, Seongmoon Kim
SJR Q2MathematicsOA

We propose a novel portfolio evaluation method, a distance-based approach, which directly evaluates the portfolio composition rather than portfolio returns. In this approach, we consider a portfolio as an estimator for an in-sample tangency portfolio, which we define as the optimal reference portfolio. We then evaluate the portfolio by computing its vector distance to the optimal reference portfolio. In search of the proper distance-based performance measure, we choose four representative vector

Duality in staffing problems: Between holding costs and waiting constraints
Seung Bum Soh, Itai Gurvich

There are two alternative ways to capture the tension between capacity expenses and customer-delay costs in staffing problems. The cost paradigm assigns a price tag to customer delay and optimizes the combined costs of staffing and waiting. The constraint paradigm, in contrast, replaces the waiting-time cost with constraints and seeks to minimize staffing costs subject to these constraints. The duality of these two formulations is important for both the implementation of delay costs through cons

Yeong-Gil Kim, Jeong‐Soo Park, Seung Bum Soh
Journal of the Korean Society of Supply Chain Management

The first goal of this study is to verify whether a positive relationship between improving Supply Chain level CSR practice and corporate performance exists or not. As the second step of the research, we tried to confirm whether implementing benefit share strategy, and technological and human support strategy among various strategies of Coexistent Cooperation have positive moderate effect on the relationship respectively. To verify those research questions, empirical surveys on 203 companies in

The Effect of Strategic Deviance on Cost Behavior of R&D Expenditures
Seung Bum Soh, Chang Seop Rhee, Donghyun Kim

[Purpose]This study empirically examines the cost behavior of R&D expenditures according to the level of strategic deviance of companies. [Methodology]In this study, we set up a research model based on Anderson et al.(2003) and conduct an empirical analysis on Korean listed companies from 2001 to 2022. [Findings]As a result of empirical analysis, we find anti-stickiness cost behavior in R&D expenditures from strategic deviance companies. This means that the higher the level of strategic

Asymptotically Optimal Solution for TSF-Constrained Staffing Problem
Seung Bum Soh

Technical Note—What’s in a Constraint? On the Ambiguity of Standard Delay Targets
Seung Bum Soh, Itai Gurvich
SJR Q1Operations Research

Ambiguities in Average Speed of Answer Targets Staffing problems are often formulated as satisfization problems, in which the cost of servers is minimized subject to quality of service constraints. These constraints are intended to capture customers’ disutility from waiting or, at least, its structure. In “What’s in a constraint? On the ambiguity of standard delay targets,” Soh and Gurvich show that such targets—especially the popular average speed of answer—are ambiguous: they give rise to mult

Countermeasures against Localization Requirements for the Saudi Energy Sector: A Case Study of Aramco's IKTVA Program
Gangpil Lee, Saeyeul Park, Seung Bum Soh
Journal of international area studies
