About the Lab

Professor Seung Hoon Lee's research lab focuses on sleep medicine and neuro-otology, with a strong emphasis on the diagnosis and pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The lab investigates the anatomical and physiological factors influencing OSA severity, including the impact of open-mouth breathing and upper airway anatomy, as well as the role of biomarkers such as coagulability in cardiovascular comorbidities. Additionally, the lab explores molecular mechanisms in glioma stem cells, particularly the EGFRvIII-PEDF-STAT3/Notch1 axis, linking oncogenic signaling to tumor progression. The lab also examines environmental noise impacts, such as wind turbine noise, on human auditory perception and annoyance. These interdisciplinary efforts integrate clinical diagnostics, molecular biology, and auditory science to advance understanding of sleep disorders and related systemic complications.

CONCLUSION: Watch-PAT may provide an accurate and clinically effective portable monitoring method for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to assess the accuracy and clinical efficacy of a wrist-worn portable device (Watch-PAT 100) to diagnose OSA. METHODS: Twenty-seven participants with suspected OSA underwent full polysomnography (PSG). Finally, 25 subjects successfully underwent portable monitoring using Watch-PAT after full PSG. The study populat

SJR Q1The Laryngoscope

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Open-mouth breathing during sleep may increase the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and complicate nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy in patients with OSA. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of open-mouth breathing on upper airway anatomy using lateral cephalometry and fiberoptic nasopharyngoscopy. STUDY DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study. METHODS: Lateral cephalometry and fiberoptic nasopharyngoscopy were carried out on 28

Annoyance caused by amplitude modulation of wind turbine noise
Seung‐Hoon Lee, Kyutae Kim, Woo‐Young Choi, Soogab Lee
SJR Q3Noise Control Engineering Journal

A listening test has been performed to investigate the relationship between human annoyance and the amplitude modulation of wind turbine noise. To obtain sound samples for the listening test, sound from a 1.5 MW wind turbine in Korea was recorded. The strength of the amplitude modulation of the sound samples was defined in terms of the modulation depth spectrum, which was approximated by assuming that the sound samples are sinusoidally amplitude-modulated. The stimuli for the listening tests wer

SJR Q1Asia-Pacific Psychiatry

This study examined the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale. The GAD-7 was standardized with data from 112 patients at a psychiatric outpatient clinic. The GAD-7 revealed high internal consistency, good test-retest reliability, and convergent validity. The ROC analysis resulted in poor sensitivity and specificity for detecting anxiety disorders in a psychiatric setting. The GAD-7 may not be useful in diagnosing anxiety disorders in a

Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor (PEDF) Expression Induced by EGFRvIII Promotes Self-renewal and Tumor Progression of Glioma Stem Cells

SJR Q1PLoS BiologyOA

Epidermal growth factor receptor variant III (EGFRvIII) has been associated with glioma stemness, but the direct molecular mechanism linking the two is largely unknown. Here, we show that EGFRvIII induces the expression and secretion of pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) via activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), thereby promoting self-renewal and tumor progression of glioma stem cells (GSCs). Mechanistically, PEDF sustained GSC self-renewal by Notch1 cle

OBJECTIVES: Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), like adult OSAS, is characterized by intermittent upper airway collapse during sleep and is associated with anatomic and neuromuscular factors. However, the clinical manifestations, diagnostic criteria, and polysomnographic findings of OSAS in children are likely to be different from those in adults. The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics that distinguish the clinical manifestations and polysomnographic finding

Jeju black cattle are known as one of Korea's traditional cattle. However, Hanwoo is more well-known to Korean meat consumers as representative beef cattle. Despite the popularity of these two breeds, comparison of the nutritional characteristics between Jeju black cattle and Hanwoo have not been studied. Here, we compared the fatty acid and amino acid characteristics between two Korean traditional cattle and Wagyu breeds. A total of 62 cattle were used in this study. The Jeju black cattle beef

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The aim of this study was to demonstrate postoperative changes in sleep quality in children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), using both conventional sleep staging and electrocardiogram-based cardiopulmonary coupling (CPC) analysis. The hypothesis is that being electroencephalography (EEG)-independent, CPC may detect changes in sleep quality that traditional sleep architecture analysis cannot. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective outcome research. METHODS: We included 37 children
