About the Lab
Professor Seung Hyun Lee's research lab specializes in molecular microbiology and infectious disease diagnostics, with a focus on tick-borne pathogens and bacterial identification using molecular genetic techniques. The lab employs PCR-based gene analysis, phylogenetic characterization, and sequence comparison of housekeeping genes (such as groEL, com-1, and 16S rRNA) to detect and differentiate pathogenic bacteria like *Coxiella burnetii*, *Rickettsia* spp., and *Borrelia* spp. in vector and environmental samples. Their work contributes to understanding the epidemiology of zoonotic infections in Korea and supports the development of molecular tools for accurate diagnosis and surveillance. The lab also explores applications in clinical diagnostics, such as ultrasound-guided biopsy techniques for improved medical decision-making.

15The performance of a cellular network can be significantly improved by employing many base stations (BSs), which shortens transmission distances. However, there exist no known results on quantifying the performance gains from deploying many BSs. To address this issue, we adopt a stochastic-geometry model of the downlink cellular network and analyze the mobile outage probability. Specifically, given Poisson distributed BSs, the outage probability is shown to diminish inversely with the increasing
Two Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks were found positive in PCR assay of com-1 gene to detect Coxiella burnetii DNA from 100 ticks. The nucleotide sequences of com-1 and 16S rRNA gene were determined from 2 ticks and compared with those of other C. burnetii strains. The results suggest that H. longicornis harbor Coxiella sp. bacteria in Korea. Furthermore, icd, cbhE', and cbbE' genes are C. burnetii specific genes whereas com-1 gene is Coxiella genus specific gene. This study gives the first docu
The nucleotide sequences (534 to 546 bp) of the groEL gene, which encodes the 60-kDa heat shock protein GroEL, from 15 rickettsial strains were determined and compared. In the phylogenetic tree created by the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic averages and the neighbor-joining method, rickettsial strains could be distinguished from Ehrlichia strains. Five spotted fever group strains, four typhus group strains, and six scrub typhus group (STG) strains were differentiated as distinct ent
US-guided VABB is an accurate and safe method that can help decision-making in the diagnostic process and can be an alternative for excisional surgery in some therapeutic circumstances.
The nucleotide sequences of the groEL genes, the flagellin genes, and the 16S rRNA genes from 22 reference strains of Borrelia were compared. groEL sequence analysis is useful not only in interspecies differentiation but also in intraspecies differentiation of Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii isolates.
The nucleotide sequences (310 bp) of the groEL gene, which encode the 60-kDa heat shock protein GroEL from 31 reference strains of Borrelia were determined and compared. More than 92.3% similarity was observed among Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato strains. In the phylogenetic tree constructed with the maximum-likelihood method, each species of B. burgdorferi sensu lato was differentiated as a distinct entity. We developed polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysi
Significance Programmed cell death 5 (PDCD5) plays a pivotal role in cellular apoptosis. Pathological relevance of PDCD5 is mostly found in human cancers; however, the role of PDCD5 in noncancerous diseases is not fully elucidated. Here we show that mice with endothelial PDCD5 deficiency have elevated serum nitric oxide levels and an atheroprotective effect in blood vessels. In addition, PDCD5 disrupts the HDAC3–protein kinase B (PKB/AKT) interaction and inhibits AKT-eNOS signaling and nitric ox
Primary isolated extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare tumor. Although it commonly involves nasopharynx or upper respiratory tract, only 10% of cases involves the gastrointestinal tract. Stomach and small intestine are the most commonly involved sites in the gastrointestinal tract. Primary isolated extramedullary plasmacytoma of colon is extremely rare. We report a case of 45-year-old man who presented with 1-year history of lower abdominal pain. Colonoscopy showed a colonic stricture about 50 c
Various tumors can occur in the scrotum. Of them, angiomyofibroblastoma-like tumors are very rare mesenchymal tumors. Angiomyofibroblastoma-like tumors cannot be easily differentially diagnosed from other malignant tumors invading the male genital tract on the basis of clinical characteristics and imaging study. Therefore, surgical removal and a histopathologic diagnosis must also be performed.
Although POAF was related to LTAF in both genders, cumulative survival free of LTAF was poorer among females than among males. Additionally, a significant correlation with long-term mortality after CABG was observed among female patients with POAF.
(CBW) on DOX-induced cardiotoxicity (DICT). We utilized H9c2 rat cardiomyocytes and MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells to evaluate the effects of CBW on DOX-induced cell death. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and oxygen consumption rate were measured in H9c2 cells. C57BL/6 mice were treated with DOX and CBW to assess their impact on various cardiac parameters. Human-induced pluripotent stem-cell-derived cardiomyocytes were also used to investigate D
