About the Lab
Professor Seung Uk Son's research lab specializes in the design, synthesis, and application of advanced nanomaterials and hybrid porous frameworks for catalysis and energy-related technologies. Key research directions include the development of transition metal and bimetallic nanoparticles with controlled size and surface chemistry for efficient organic transformations, the creation of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based hybrid materials with tailored surface properties for environmental applications, and the engineering of nanostructured anodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. The lab also explores hollow and microporous organic networks for catalytic and adsorption applications, emphasizing structure-property relationships through advanced characterization techniques.

15We synthesized Ni/Pd core/shell nanoparticles from the consecutive thermal decomposition of metal-surfactant complexes. The nanoparticle catalyst was atom-economically applied for various Sonogashira coupling reactions.
We developed facile synthetic procedures to produce monodisperse palladium nanoparticles stabilized with various phosphine ligands by a better understanding of their coordination chemistry. Compared to small sized phosphines such as triphenylphosphine (TPP), trioctylphosphine (TOP) showed weaker coordination ability to palladium nanoparticles. This result was ascertained based on the 31 P NMR spectroscopic results of in situ generated molecular palladium complexes. Since TOP acts as a more effic
This work reports the synthesis and application of metal-organic framework (MOF)@microporous organic network (MON) hybrid materials. Coating a MOF, UiO-66-NH2, with MONs forms hybrid microporous materials with hydrophobic surfaces. The original UiO-66-NH2 shows good wettability in water. In comparison, the MOF@MON hybrid materials float on water and show excellent performance for adsorption of a model organic compound, toluene, in water. Chemical etching of the MOF results in the formation of ho
Through a solution approach, SnSe(2) nanoplate-graphene composites were prepared and applied as anode materials in lithium ion batteries, showing promising storage performance superior to SnSe(2) nanoplates or graphene alone.
We synthesized uniform Cu2O coated Cu nanoparticles from the thermal decomposition of copper acetylacetonate followed by air oxidation and used these nanoparticles as catalysts for Ullmann type amination coupling reactions of aryl chlorides
Hollow microporous organic networks (H-MONs) were prepared by a template method using silica spheres. The shell thickness was delicately controlled by changing the synthetic conditions. The H-MONs were used as a template for the synthesis of nanoparticulate Co3O4 hollows which showed excellent catalytic performance in H2O2 oxidation.
Abstract Direct knitting of nucleophilic arene monomers in the presence of electrophilic cross‐linker, like formaldehyde dimethyl acetal, is proven to be a cost‐effective and versatile method for the synthesis of porous organic polymers. The resulting hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) are featured by hierarchical porous structure, high surface area, and pore volume. Coordinating functional groups can be easily installed with this method into the rigid aryl network. Direct knitting to HCPs has the
Tubes from tubes: Microporous organic nanotubes were prepared by Sonogashira coupling between tetrakis(4-ethynylphenyl)methane and N,N′-di(4-iodophenyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium dichloride. These nanotubes were used as a template for secondary inorganic materials, namely Fe2O3 nanotubes with a high discharge capacity and excellent stability. Detailed facts of importance to specialist readers are published as ”Supporting Information”. Such documents are peer-reviewed, but not copy-edited or typeset. The
Tubular microporous organic networks bearing imidazolium salts (T-IM) were prepared by Sonogashira coupling of tetrakis(4-ethynylphenyl)methane and diiodoimidazolium salts, which showed promising catalytic activities in heterogeneous conversion of CO(2) into cyclic carbonates.
Novel complexes 1 and 2 based on N-heterocyclic carbenes, which are analogous to Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) and Ru(terpy)(2)(2+), respectively, were synthesized. The complex, which is analogous to Ru(terpy)(2)(2+), exhibited promising photoluminescence properties with a long lifetime of 820 ns in acetonitrile and 3100 ns in water at room temperature, respectively. In addition, ab initio calculations were carried out.
New catalytic systems based on a bis(1,3-disubstituted imidazoline 2-thione)-copper complex have been developed for the highly regioselective boration of internal alkynes.

Tiny pores: Benzodifuran moieties were introduced into microporous organic networks (MONs) through a tandem process consisting of Sonogashira coupling of 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene and 2,5-diiodo-1,4-hydroquinone and intramolecular cyclization. The resultant benzodifuran-containing MON showed promising photocatalytic activities in the oxidative conversion of primary amines into imines.
High-quality copper selenide nanodiscs with a 2.6 nm thickness were prepared using imidazoline-2-selenone as a new selenium precursor. The phase of prepared nanomaterials was characterized to be cubic Cu2−XSe by HR-TEM, XRPD, EDX, and XPS. Promising optoelectric properties were observed by solar simulators after fabricating the film on glass.
This work shows that porous solid systems for catalytic carbon dioxide fixation can be developed by a direct assembly of metal-salen containing building blocks with organic connectors through a carbon–carbon bond formation reaction. For use as a dihalo building block, Al, Cr, Co-salen building blocks with two iodo groups were prepared. Sonogashira coupling of these building blocks with tetra(4-ethynylphenyl)methane resulted in microporous organic networks (MONs) bearing Al, Cr, and Co-salen spec
