About the Lab
Professor Seyoung Lee's research lab specializes in lower extremity biomechanics, with a primary focus on chronic ankle instability (CAI) and its systemic effects on joint function, physical activity, and quality of life. The lab investigates the interplay between ankle joint pathology, structural alignment, sensory impairments, and downstream impacts on the knee and lower limb function. Research directions include clinical assessment tools (e.g., Y-Balance Test, FAAM, WOMAC), injury epidemiology in athletes and dancers, and the efficacy of manual therapy interventions such as joint mobilization. The lab also explores long-term consequences of athletic injuries, particularly in retired athletes and pre-professional dancers.

Participants were tested on the anterior (ANT), posterolateral (PL), and
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of the declination of the subtalar joint rotation axis and the structural features of the ankle joint complex such as rear-foot angle alignment and ligament laxity test between chronic ankle instability (CAI) patients and healthy control. Method: A total of 76 subjects and CAI group (N=38, age: 23.11 ± 7.63 yrs, height: 165.67 ± 9.54 cm, weight: 60.13 ± 11.71 kg) and healthy control (N=38, age: 23.55 ± 7.03 yrs, height: 167.92 ± 9.22
This study collected the ballet injury characteristics of 170 preprofessional ballet dancers. Data was collected three times a year using a web-based system. The statistical analysis was performed via Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version 23.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) and Microsoft Excel (Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA, USA). Injury profiles and mechanisms were calculated as incidence rate/1,000 h, acute/chronic, recurrence, injury location, type, and mechanisms. The 170 dancers
Objective: Epidemiological research shows that 47 to 73% of athletes suffer from recurrent ankle sprains. Joint mobilization techniques (JMT) implemented in correcting may be beneficial in the management of ankle injuries. The purpose of this study is to examine the immediate JM on ankle complex as clinical measures in individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI) through intervention. Method: Thirteen subjects with CAI (8 males and 5 females) participated in this study. Each subject tried to
Understanding sciences behind fall-related hip fractures in older adults is important to develop effective interventions for prevention. The aim of this review is to provide biomechanical understanding and prevention strategies of falls and related hip fractures in older adults, in order to guide future research directions from biomechanical perspectives. While most hip fractures are due to a fall, a few of falls are injurious causing hip fractures, and most falls are non-injurious. Fall mechani

The peak compressive forces at L5/S1 during patient transfers have been estimated. However, no study has considered the actual patient body weight that caregivers had to handle during transfers. We developed a simple kinematic model of lifting to address this limitation. Fifteen prospective health care providers transferred a 70-kg individual who mimicked a patient ("patient") from bed to wheelchair. Trials were acquired with the patient donning (weighted) and doffing (unweighted) a 5-kg weight
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in spatiotemporal gait performance, function, and pain of lower-extremity according to foot morphological characteristics. Method: This case-control study recruited 42 adults and they were classified into 3 groups according to foot morphology using navicular-drop test: pronated (≥ 10 mm), normal (5~9 mm), and supinated (≤ 4 mm) feet. Spatiotemporal gait analysis and questionnaires including Foot and Ankle Ability Measure activit

While efforts have been made to address fall-related injuries in older adults, the problem is unsolved to date. The purpose of this review is to provide a guideline for fall and injury prevention programs in older adults, based on evidence generated over the past 30 years. Research articles published between 1990 and 2020 have been searched on PubMed, using keywords, including but not limited to, falls, hip fracture, injuries, intervention, older adults, prevention, hip protector, vitamin D, saf
The present study aimed to investigate differences in muscle activation of peroneus longus (PL) and tibialis anterior (TA) among individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI), copers, and heatlhy controls during walking and running. A total of 54 participants were recruited for this study. 54 participants were equally assigned to the CAI, coper, and control groups based on eligibility criteria for each group.
