About the Lab

Professor Soo Jung Shin's research lab specializes in endodontic biomaterials and regenerative endodontics, focusing on the biological and mechanical properties of calcium silicate-based cements and sealers. The lab investigates matrix metalloproteinases in dental pulp and periapical tissues, evaluates root canal filling techniques and materials, and explores the effects of biomaterials on stem cells from the apical papilla, particularly in relation to angiogenesis and inflammation. The lab also applies advanced imaging technologies, such as quantitative light-induced fluorescence, to improve the diagnosis of dental cracks. These interdisciplinary efforts aim to enhance clinical outcomes through improved biomaterial design and diagnostic precision.

Tissue Levels of Matrix Metalloproteinases in Pulps and Periapical Lesions
Su‐Jung Shin, Ji Hyun Lee, Seung‐Hak Baek, Sai Kiang Lim
SJR Q1Journal of Endodontics

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tissue levels of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1, -2, -3 and their distributions in inflamed human dental pulps and periapical lesions. Samples were subjected to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and/or immunohistochemistry by using specific antibodies to MMP-1, -2, and -3. Results from enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were analyzed by using the Mann-Whitney U test and presented as p values. The concentrations of MMP-1 in all experimental groups we

Comparison of the Percentage of Voids in the Canal Filling of a Calcium Silicate-Based Sealer and Gutta Percha Cones Using Two Obturation Techniques

SJR Q2MaterialsOA

This study evaluated the root-filling quality of a calcium silicate-based sealer and gutta percha (GP) cones by measuring the percentage of voids. Twenty artificial molar teeth were divided into two groups: one obturated using the single-cone (SC) technique, and the other using the continuous wave (CW) technique. Obturation was performed with GP cones and Endoseal MTA (mineral trioxide aggregate, Maruchi, Wonju, Korea). Obturated teeth were scanned using microcomputed tomography, and the percent

SJR Q2ScanningOA

Objective . To investigate the effect of different setting conditions on surface microhardness and setting properties of calcium silicate-based sealers. Methods . Three sealers, EndoSequence Bioceramic (BC; Brasseler USA, Savannah, GA, USA), Endoseal MTA (ES; Maruchi, Wonju, Korea), and Well-Root ST (WR; Vericom, Chuncheon, Korea), were compared. Specimens were exposed to either butyric acid (pH 5.4) or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS [pH 7.4]) for 48 h and stored at 100% humidity for 12 days. Th

AIM: To evaluate the effects of two types of calcium silicate cements on viability, angiogenic growth factor release, and angiogenic and inflammation-related gene expression in human stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAP). METHODOLOGY: SCAPs were grown for 7 days with either ProRoot mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) or Biodentine (BD). Cell viability and media concentrations of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF/VEGFA) and angiopoietin 1 (ANGPT1) were measured. The expression of genes re

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study evaluated the clinical efficacy of quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) technology for crack detection and the diagnosis of cracked teeth and assessed the possibility of a quantitative evaluation of cracks using QLF technology. METHODS: Patients who were clinically diagnosed with cracked teeth over a 1-year period were included. The QLF images of the corresponding symptomatic cracked teeth and asymptomatic contralateral teeth with crack lines were ta

Yong‐Sik Cho, Youngjun Kwak, Su‐Jung Shin
SJR Q2MaterialsOA

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of ultrasonic vibration and thermo-hydrodynamic obturation (VibraTHO) using two types of root canal sealers, in comparison to the single-cone (SC) technique and a calcium silicate-based root canal sealer in complex root canal anatomies. Thirty single-rooted human maxillary premolars with two canals that had a complex root canal anatomy of transverse anastomoses or ramifications were prepared and assigned to the following three experimental groups, acc
