1945년 ‘해방’은 제각기 다른 이유로 제국 전역에 흩어져 있었던 사람들을 대규모로 이동시켰다. 귀환은 사람들로 하여금 물리적‧정신적 감각의 급진적인 변화를 요구하는 과정이었고, 또한 많은 이들이 공유했던 집단 경험이었다. 대개 해방 직후 한반도에서 쓰인 귀환서사는 유랑자로서 겪은 고달픈 여정을 바탕으로, 이후 새로운 국민국가에 소속됨으로써 얻을 수 있을 정신적 물리적 안정감을, 그리고 그것에 대한 낙관적인 기대를 표현하는 단순하고 폐쇄적인 서사의 형태를 취했다. 그러나 손소희의 『남풍』은 기존의 귀환서사의 구조를 따르면서도, 민족주의 및 국민국가 이데올로기로 포섭되지 않는다. 이 차이는 작품의 주요 화자가 식민지민 디아스포라라는 점에 기인한다. 역사적으로 큰 변화를 맞이할 때마다 가장 먼저 도태되고 소외되는 이들은 ‘해방’ 이후에도 여전히 난민화된다. ‘해방’, 귀환의 장면은 난민, 디아스포라들의 타자화 뒤에 오는 것이기에 기만적인 것으로 그려질 수밖에 없고, 『남풍』은 이 역사
