About the Lab
Professor Soo Min Lee's research lab focuses on integrative and traditional medicine approaches to chronic and complex diseases, particularly in oncology, neurodegenerative disorders, and adverse drug reactions. The lab investigates the clinical efficacy of traditional Korean herbal formulations—such as Galgeunhaegi-tang, Handayeolso-tang, and Hyeongbangpaedok-san—in improving patient outcomes, including quality of life, symptom management, and recovery from sepsis or allergic reactions. The lab also explores the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying these treatments, especially in relation to ion homeostasis in Schwann cells and the pathophysiology of peripheral nerve degeneration. Additionally, the lab contributes to environmental health research by assessing ozone formation potential from industrial VOC emissions.

15Objectives The quality of life in cancer patients is important. The aim of this study is to report a case which showed symptoms improvement after treatment with modified Galgeunhaegi-tang. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical records. The patient’s body weight and the circumference of lower extremity were measured and the subjective symptoms such as chest pain were evaluated by the NRS(Numeric Rating Scale). And the frequency of defecation was checked daily. Results The patient had re
Irreversible peripheral neurodegenerative diseases such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy are becoming increasingly common due to rising rates of diabetes mellitus; however, no effective therapeutic treatments have been developed. One of main causes of irreversible peripheral neurodegenerative diseases is dysfunction in Schwann cells, which are neuroglia unique to the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Because homeostasis of calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) is essential for Schwann cell dynamic
Even in an era where 8-meter class telescopes are common, small telescopes are considered very valuable research facilities since they are available for rapid follow-up or long term monitoring observations. To maximize the usefulness of small telescopes in Korea, we established the SomangNet, a network of 0.4-1.0 m class optical telescopes operated by Korean institutions, in 2020. Here, we give an overview of the project, describing the current participating telescopes, its scientific scope and
ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to report the improvement of delirium and performance status in the small-cell lung cancer patient who had multiple brain metastases and pericardial effusion after Sasang constitutional treatment. MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the medical records, medical laboratory and image scans of 71-year-old male patient diagnosed as small-cell lung cancer. ResultsThe small-cell lung cancer with multiple brain metastases patient sometimes talked deliriously even afte
Chamber emission tests were performed to evaluate the contribution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to ozone formation discharged from organic solvents frequently used in the printing factories, laundry shops, beauty salons, and car-painting garages near residential areas. Analysis of OH loss rate (LOH) and ozone formation potential (OFP) in terms of OH loss rate constant (kOH) and the maximum incremental reactivity (MIR) revealed the possibility of ozone formation. According to the emission
ObjectivesAdverse reactions can becaused by contrast media used in computed tomography. The aim of this study was to report the improvement of allergic response caused by contrast media after treatment with Modified Hyeongbangpaedok-san, histamine antagonists and steroids. MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the medical records. The patient’s subjective symptoms such as rash and pruritus were evaluated by the range of rash and numeric rating scale(NPS). ResultsAll symptoms showed nearly complete
Objectives Despite the treatment with antibiotics, patients with sepsis has a high mortality (80%) in the underlying disease group. The aim of this study was to report the improvement of septic condition of the cholangiocarcinoma patient after the treatment with Handayeolso-tang, Fel Tauri, and antibiotics. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical records. The patient’s subjective symptoms such as chilling and abdominal pain were evaluated by NRS and the performance status was evaluated b
In order to alleviate gas odors such as ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from the fertilization process of livestock manure, aqueous chlorine dioxide (ClO2) was added to the absorption solution in a microbubble scrubber. Microbubbles improved the absorption capacity for ammonia and hydrogen sulfide by 104% and 265%, respectively, compared to macrobubbles. Addition of ClO2 particularly increased the absorption of H2S by 530%. The mass transfer coefficient for these gases to aqueous scrubb
This paper analyzed the female image reflected in the character “Jang Huibin,” the most frequently selected main character in the 30-year historic drama, and investigated the changes in makeup. Following is the analysis of makeup changes along with changes in women’s images reflected in the character “Jang Huibin” from 1988 to 2013. The images changed in the order of femme fatale by dichotomy in the authoritarian age, characteristic femme fatale reflecting the fever of Generation X, woman with m
Objectives: Rectal cancer bleeding occurs approximately 20% of overall rectal cancer patients. The current standard treatments cannot cover minor bleeding enough. Failures of the local or systemic approaches to stop bleeding are frequently reported. Methods: we reported a case of male rectal cancer patient who was treated with herbal decoction and significantly improved on symptoms, such as, loose stools and rectal bleeding. Previous to first visiting to our clinic, he was prescribed to use oral
Objectives The purpose of study was to identify cancer related symptoms of Sasang Constitution based on the classic of Sasang Constitutional Medicine (SCM). Methods The bibliographical study was performed with 『Dongyisoosebowon-Shinchukbon(東醫壽世保元 辛丑本)』, Dongyisoosebowon-Sasangchobongwon(東醫壽世保元 四象草本券), 『Cancer』, and several review articles. The perspective on severe illness in SCM was investigated. And ‘the critical state’ of constitutional symptoms based on 『Dongyisoosebowon』 was identified as c
News plays a similar role wi
The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that how the varying block sizes determine pedestrian-friendly environment in city planning. For this purpose, in Chapter 2, elements that determine on block size and theories about blocks are reviewed. The Chapter 3 analyzes various cases related with pedestrian-friendly block sizes. In Chapter 4, based on literature review and case studies, research methods are proposed to test the study hypothesis. As criteria for pedestrian-friendly conditi
