About the Lab

Professor Soo-Young Hong's research lab specializes in physical and organic chemistry, with a focus on reaction kinetics, solvent effects, and reaction mechanisms—particularly the solvolysis of alkyl halides such as benzyl and substituted benzyl bromides. The lab investigates the influence of solvent polarity and electronic effects on activation parameters and reaction pathways, often employing conductivity measurements to study reaction kinetics. A significant portion of the work also explores ion exchange processes, especially the removal of iron and hardness ions from water using cation exchange resins, highlighting applications in water treatment and industrial water quality improvement. The lab combines fundamental kinetic studies with practical environmental and industrial chemistry applications.

Dae-Soo Lee, Soon‐Yung Hong
SJR Q4Journal of the Korean Chemical Society

The waters throughout Taegu area for 87 points were analysed and according to the analytical data, following unfavorable characteristics for industrial uses were given: (1)Shows strong hardness, (2)Has high ratio of ignition residue to evaporation residue, (3) pH value is over 7, (4) Contains considerable quntities of iron. And then investigated the exchange rate and regeneration level of iron ion using cation exchange resin, Lewatit KS.When the hard water containing 2.2 ppm of iron with 18.4 ppm

Kinetics of the Solvolysis of Benzyl Bromides in Alcohols
Yong-Jin Lim, Soo‐Dong Yoh, Soon‐Yung Hong
SJR Q4Journal of the Korean Chemical Society

The kinetics of the solvolysis of benzyl and p-or m-substituted benzyl bromides in various alcohols have been determined by an electric conductivity method. From these reactions, a curved Hammett plot is obtained and a mechanism is proposed to account for the nonlinear behavior observed. In addition, effects of solvent polarity on the activation parameters for the solvolysis of benzyl bromides are discussed.
