About the Lab
Professor SoYeong Lee's research lab focuses on the pathophysiology of acute and chronic kidney diseases, with a particular emphasis on the molecular mechanisms underlying acute kidney injury (AKI), diabetic tubulopathy, and the transition from acute to chronic kidney disease. The lab investigates key processes such as apoptosis, microvascular rarefaction, mitochondrial dynamics, and extracellular matrix remodeling, often integrating in vitro and in vivo models to explore therapeutic targets. A central theme is the role of cellular stress responses and metabolic dysregulation in kidney injury and repair, with translational applications in diabetic nephropathy and proteinuric kidney diseases. The lab also employs computational and biophysical approaches to understand protein structure-function relationships and molecular interactions in biological systems.

15Pathogenesis of septic acute kidney injury is thought to be different from that of ischemia/reperfusion-induced acute kidney injury. Our data showed a link between apoptosis, immune suppression, and the development of acute kidney injury during sepsis and suggest that strategies targeting apoptosis or enhancing immunity might be a potential therapeutic strategy for septic acute kidney injury.
Microvascular rarefaction following an episode of acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with renal hypoxia and progression toward chronic kidney disease. The mechanisms contributing to microvascular rarefaction are not well-understood, although disruption in local angioregulatory substances is thought to contribute. Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 is an endopeptidase important in modifying the extracellular matrix (ECM) and remodeling the vasculature. We examined the role of MMP-9 gene deleti
Knowing protein structure and inferring its function from the structure are one of the main issues of computational structural biology, and often the first step is studying protein secondary structure. There have been many attempts to predict protein secondary structure contents. Previous attempts assumed that the content of protein secondary structure can be predicted successfully using the information on the amino acid composition of a protein. Recent methods achieved remarkable prediction acc
Purpose. In this study, we investigated the effect of PGC1 α activators on mitochondrial fusion, fission, and autophagic quality control in renal tubular cells in a diabetic environment in vivo and in vitro. We also examined whether the upregulation of PGC1 α attenuates diabetic tubulopathy by normalizing mitochondrial homeostasis. Methods . HKC8 cells were subjected to high-glucose conditions (30 mM D-glucose). Diabetes was induced with streptozotocin (STZ, 50 mg/kg i.p. for 5 days) in male C57
We determined the partial molar volumes and adiabatic compressibilities of N-acetyl amino acid amides, N-acetyl amino acid methylamides, N-acetyl amino acids, and short oligoglycines as a function of urea concentration. We analyze these data within the framework of a statistical thermodynamic formalism to determine the association constants for the reaction in which urea binds to the glycyl unit and each of the naturally occurring amino acid side chains replacing two waters of hydration. Our det
Heavy proteinuria with or without features of nephrotic syndrome is associated with many primary and systemic diseases. For diabetic patients, distinguishing nondiabetic renal disease (NDRD) from diabetic nephropathy (DN) is important in choosing treatment modalities and determining renal prognosis. However, clinical relevance of heavy proteinuria is inconsistent with clinical DN assessments. This study investigated the clinicopathological features and renal outcomes of DN and NDRD in type 2 dia
Hepatitis B virus infection is a serious global health problem and causes life-threatening liver disease. In particular, genotype C shows high prevalence and severe liver disease compared with other genotypes. However, the underlying mechanisms regarding virological traits still remain unclear. This study investigated the clinical factors and capacity to modulate Type I interferon (IFN-I) between two HBV polymerase polymorphisms rt269L and rt269I in genotype C. This report compared clinical fact
Abstract Mitochondrial dysfunction is considered to be an important mediator of the pro‐aging process in chronic kidney disease, which is continuously increasing worldwide. Although PTEN‐induced kinase 1 (PINK1) regulates mitochondrial function, its role in renal aging remains unclear. We investigated the association between PINK1 and renal aging, especially through the cGAS‐STING pathway, which is known to result in an inflammatory phenotype. Pink1 knockout (Pink1 −/− ) C57BL/6 mice and senesce
CONTEXT: The ability of intermediate trophoblasts to invade maternal tissue during placentation depends on how well they can degrade the extracellular matrix. Invasion into the extracellular matrix requires many complex proteases. A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs (ADAMTS) is a novel family of secreted metalloproteinases. The ADAMTS-1, -4, -5, and -14 subtypes are known to be expressed in human placenta, but little is understood about their expression patterns. OBJEC
The second-generation selective 5-HT2 receptor antagonists and reuptake inhibitors (SARIs) class antidepressants are known to have fewer cardiovascular side effects than the older ones. However, several case reports showed that trazodone, one of the second-generation SARIs, induces QT prolongation, cardiac arrhythmia, and ventricular tachycardia. Although these clinical cases suggested trazodone-induced cardiotoxicity, the toxicological actions of trazodone on cardiac action potentials (APs) bey
We investigated the effects of chloroquine (CQ) and amodiaquine (AQ) on AMPK phosphorylation in renal tubular cells in a diabetic environment in vivo and in vitro. We also examined whether CQ- or AQ-mediated AMPK activity restoration attenuated diabetic tubulopathy by normalizing mitochondrial fragmentation. Human renal proximal epithelial cells (HKC8) were incubated in high-glucose conditions. Diabetes was induced with streptozotocin in male C57/BL6J mice. Treatment with CQ or AQ abolished high
A new protocol for the synthesis of 2-substituted quinolines from 2-aminostyryl ketones has been developed using iodide as a nucleophilic catalyst. Conjugate addition of iodide to 2-aminostyryl ketones yielded the corresponding β-iodoketones, which could have a conformation where the amino and carbonyl groups are proximal through free rotation about the Cα-Cβ single bond. Subsequent condensation between the amino and carbonyl groups followed by elimination of hydrogen iodid
Tyrosyl-DNA phosphodiesterase 1 (Tdp1) is a key enzyme that hydrolyzes the phosphodiester bond between tyrosine of topoisomerase and 3'-phosphate of DNA and repairs topoisomerase-mediated DNA damage during chromosome metabolism. However, functional Tdp1 has only been described in yeast and human to date. In human, mutations of the Tdp1 gene are involved in the disease spinocerebellar ataxia with axonal neuropathy. In plants, we have identified the functional nuclear protein AtTDP, homolog to hum
