About the Lab
Professor Suhyeon Baek's research lab specializes in ophthalmic oculoplastic and orbital surgery, with a strong focus on thyroid eye disease, lacrimal system disorders, and pediatric orbital fractures. The lab investigates the structural and functional changes in the eyelid and ocular surface, particularly through advanced imaging techniques like meibography and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), to understand disease mechanisms and improve clinical outcomes. Research also extends to surgical innovations, including monocanalicular and bicanalicular intubation techniques for nasolacrimal duct obstruction and canalicular laceration repair.

15PURPOSE: To compare the structure and function of the Meibomian gland and eyelid blinking patterns between thyroid eye disease (TED) patients with dry eye and nonthyroidal dry eye (DE) patients. METHODS: Interferometer (lipid layer thickness, incomplete blinking rate and meibography) and (3) slit-lamp biomicroscopy (corneal staining, tear break-up time (TBUT), meibum expression). RESULTS: The TED and DE groups included 98 and 62 patients, respectively. The meiboscores of the upper eyelid in TED
BACKGROUND: Numerous surgical techniques of silicone tube intubation in congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) have been described; these techniques can be divided into monocanalicular intubation (MCI) and bicanalicular intubation (BCI). The aim of this study was to compare the clinical effectiveness of MCI versus BCI of CNLDO. METHODS: In a prospective, nonrandomized, comparative case study, patients with CNLDO underwent probing under endoscopic control and either BCI or MCI under gen
PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of canalicular laceration repair using monocanalicular intubation with Monoka tubes. METHODS: A total of 36 single lacerated canaliculi were repaired using monocanalicular intubation with Monoka tubes, without mucosal anastomosis of the canaliculi, and were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic information, injury locations, associated ocular injuries, complications and outcomes were analysed. RESULTS: Mean patient age was 34 years (ran
In order to describe the demographics, etiologic and clinical factors, and outcomes of orbital fractures in children, we have reviewed a case series of 17 patients under 18 years of age with internal orbital fractures (i.e., without involvement of the orbital rim) presenting to the Ghil hospital between March 2000 and June 2001. For 15 of the patients, we performed orbital wall reconstruction with Medpor barrier sheet implantation (thickness 1mm) through transconjunctival approach under endoscop
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether the optic nerve is affected by thyroid eye disease (TED) before the development of dysthyroid optic neuropathy with diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI). METHODS: Twenty TED patients and 20 controls were included. The mean, axial, and radial diffusivities and fractional anisotropy (FA) value were measured at the optic nerves in DTI. Extraocular muscle diameters were measured on computed tomography. The diffusivities and FA of the optic nerves w
In our study, increased contrast sensitivity and improved functional visual acuity after upper eyelid blepharoplasty were caused by changes in ocular HOA and the degree of lash ptosis after surgery. There were no changes in corneal topography or astigmatism.
This study presents a normal range of Korean lacrimal gland dimensions as measured by computed tomography. This range can aid in differentiating diseased and nondiseased lacrimal glands, especially when used in combination with physical examination. These data may also be useful in clinical trials that involve lacrimal gland size.
PURPOSE: To assess the relative frequency and clinicopathologic characteristics of benign conjunctival tumors. METHODS: A retrospective study of 80 consecutive patients admitted to our hospital with benign eyelid and conjunctival tumor between April 2000 and November 2002 was undertaken, and clinical records including age, sex and involved site of tumors and pathology slides of the patients were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Twenty-three males and 33 females presented with benign eyelid tum
