About the Lab
Professor Sujin Cha's research lab focuses on the intersection of development economics, political economy, and public policy, with a particular emphasis on international development cooperation, foreign aid effectiveness, and the socio-political impacts of Chinese foreign assistance in Africa. The lab investigates how development finance and cultural diplomacy influence public perceptions, governance, and institutional trust in recipient countries, while also exploring the political economy of trade, innovation, and industrial policy in advanced and emerging economies. A growing focus is on health policy and aging societies, especially the alignment of public R&D funding with long-term care needs in rapidly aging populations like South Korea’s.

Abstract Does foreign aid reshape citizen views on governments? How does Chinese aid relate to corruption perception in African local governments? Studying 33 African countries from 2000 to 2014 (175 590 respondents), Chinese aid heightens perceived corruption in local councillors and officials. Corruption scandals likely contribute to negative views of both China and local governance. Control variables like World Bank aid and Confucius Institutes disprove alternate theories. Heterogeneous effec
China has embarked on various initiatives to win the hearts and minds of African citizens. Does this strategy contribute to China’s soft power in the region? To answer this question, we focus on two types of initiatives: cultural diplomacy and development finance. Using geolocation information on China’s aid projects and its Confucius Institutes, combined with a survey of more than 50,000 African citizens, we find that both types of soft power initiatives increase citizens’ awareness of Chinese
The rate of technological innovation and the speed with which old technologies are discarded are fundamental features of industries in the modern economy. How do these factors shape the politics of trade and trade agreements? We describe two potential channels. Intra-industry trade and offshoring create divisions within industries between pro- and anti-integration firms: what are the effects of these disagreements on trade policy outcomes? Special interest institutions—rules and regulations which empower all interest groups, but especially large firms and trade associations—suggest an answer. In industries where firms are uniformly anti-trade, greater special interest voice should raise trade barriers. In industries where large firms are pro-trade and

The aim of this study is to analyze the distribution of publically funded research to understand if the Korean research and development funding system matches various approaches and purposes to successfully tackle the chronic care needs of
