About the Lab

Professor Sukjae Lee's research lab specializes in the historical and philosophical analysis of early modern philosophy, particularly focusing on occasionalism in thinkers such as Malebranche, Berkeley, and Leibniz. The lab explores the metaphysical foundations of divine and creaturely causality, with an emphasis on how these theories relate to divine omnipotence, substance ontology, and the nature of created reality. It also engages in interdisciplinary studies linking philosophy of religion, metaphysics, and the history of science.

Berkeley on Continuous Creation - Occasionalism Contained -
이석재

Against Winkler’s interpretation that Berkeley endorses the “conservation is but continuous creation thesis” across-the-board, this paper argues that Berkeley restricts his endorsement of the continuous creation thesis to the domain of physical bodies. Such a restricted application of the continuous creation thesis, the paper goes on to argue, reveals the distinctive nature of Berkeley’s occasionalism, an occasionalism “contained.” That is, his occasionalism with regard to physical bodies is mor

Are Mere Occasions Enough to Sustain a Malebranchean Theodicy? -A Leibnizian Reaction
이석재

Malebranche is well‐known for his occasionalism, according to which creaturesall lack genuine causal powers and God is the unique, genuine cause. Thisoccasionalism is in part motivated by Malebranche’s views about divineomnipotence, which were thought to be improperly threatened by the positingof essential causal powers in created substances. From the occasionalist’sperspective, creaturely causal essences ought not present any constraints as towhat God can will. While not as well‐known as his oc

Leibniz’s Criticism of Occasionalism as Spinozism
이석재

Leibniz, in On Nature Itself, famously charges that occasionalismmakes “God the very nature of things, while created things disappear intomere modifications of the one divine substance” (G IV 508-9/AG 165). Leibniz pivots this ‘Spinozism’ charge on the key claim that Malebrancheand like-minded occasionalists fail to appreciate that substantiality itself istightly connected to there being genuine causal forces internal to the entitiesin question. What is not clear is why Malebranche would be subj
